The Importance of Physical Fitness in Middle Age

John Teng carrying two of his children who fell asleep in the middle of a vacation tour.

Recently I attended a dinner party with some of my wife’s some college classmates. One of her classmate’s wife just had their first child and old friends were getting together to celebrate the happy occasion and to see the new baby. We all met up for dinner at a vegan restaurant. I myself am a meat eater, but I am a very curious person and I am always game to try to new cuisine. I will say that the food presentation was very nice, the ingredinets used for my indian curry dish seemed very well thought out, and the food had a lot of flavor. All in all, I felt like I was having a very healthy eating experience, as well as enjoying good company and conversation to boot! The reason that I bring up our healthy eating environent is that the guy friends who showed up at the restarant did not themselves look very healthy. My wife hung out with the smart kids in college and all of them went on to very successful and remarkable careers. But from the the standpoint of overall health, I was reminded that evening that middle age takes its toll on the physical body. Many in this demographic are very busy raising children, climbing the coroporate ladder, and/or starting their own businesses, involved in their communities, all the while trying nurture the relationships to all the important people in tier lives. So it goes as no surprise that it is just that much harder for people during middle age to get and stay in shape as it was when we were younger.

But if there was ever a time in a person’s life when it was more important than ever to be in shape, it is during the middle age years and here’s 5 reasons why.

  1. Your lifestyle choices no longer just affect you as you most likely have dependents who are now directly affected by your helath decicions.
  2. Weight bearing exercise can help to minimize and even resverse age-related muscle loss.
  3. Now is the time to be even more consious of weight gain and heart health.
  4. If you’re in a long term relationship, like it or not, part of the reason that you connected with your partner, and they with you, mostly likely had to do with being physically attracted to each other. Yes, I am with you in echoing that there are a lot of legitimate reasons why we may not feel we look as good as we did when we were just dating, but know that doing your best to keep up your looks will go a long way to benefitting your relationships.
  5. Many midlifers are still raising children (and grandchildren) and we need to stay in shape to help them, carry them, play with them, and protect them.

Whatever you choose to do to get bqck in shape is up to you. Yes, it’s important to find something that you love to do, but from a practical midlife standpoint, it’s even more important to find something that you have the time to do. Once your medical doctor has reviewed your fitness level and understands your limitations, start by setting some simple goals to move your body aroiund for just a few minutes each day. Maybe it would include walking or jogging around the block ,stretching, or doing some pushups and situps. But no matter what you do, know that being fit is more important now than it has even been so get moving!

And finally, here is a quote about the value of exercise (at any age) that I have held dear in my inspiration book for many years as follows:

“Daily exercise ---as rigorous as possible---is the best antidepressant, mood elevator, memory enhancer, dietary controller, physical health improver, sex-drive enhancer, energy and self-esteem builder that exists.”

The Ancient Samurai and Post-Traumatic Stress disorder

To be clear from the start, I am not a military veteran and I am also not a medical doctor. But what I want to share you in this article was nothing less than life changing for me. Several summers ago I entered my two oldest children in a promotional karate class for the summer. The parents would wait in the lobby while a group of children shared a group lesson. One day while waiting outside in the karate school’s lobby I picked up a Black Belt Magazine and read an article about a man named Rudy Reyes. Rudy was a Marine Force Recon combat veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and he was being interviewed about his views on using martial arts to deal with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Rudy started his remark by referring to the ancient Samurai warrior culture. Rudy said that in the approximately 300 years that the Samurai culture flourished, there were no written accounts of the Samurai suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Besides his remarkable military career, Rudy Reyes is also a champion martial artist. And in Rudy’s opinion, the Samurai used Zen meditation, and the more “feminine” endeavors of calligraphy, painting, flower arranging, and the tea ceremony “to balance out the blood, and the gore, and the guts, the life and death, and the loss, and the rage that one feels on the battlefield.”

The moment I read that I had an idea. No, I wasn’t a soldier and I did not suffer from PTSD in the way that society currently describes it, but I did live a stressful life and that stress could get the best of me sometimes. So I decided if “feminine” flower arranging was good enough for the ancient Samurai to settle their minds and spirits despite the violent lifestyle that they lived, then it was good enough for John Teng, too!

So for the last three years, I have been slowly and steadily arranging flowers around my house in the form of landscape architecture. Little by little, I had brought in 25 dump trucks carrying a total of about 200 tons of soil and mulch to fill in around the outside of the house as part of my elaborate celebration to the Samurai culture. And in doing so I found a peaceful place to settle my mind of stresses and worries that fill my mind. Here are some photos of my own flower arranging project.

The Ancient Samurai 3

I can’t even begin to imagine how horrible it must feel to be for a veteran to fight in a combat situation, and then to suffer with the traumatic effects thereafter. But what I do know is that my own level of stress greatly diminishes when I go outside and put my hands in the dirt and tending to my flowers. So many good ideas have come to me while I am just out in the fresh air taking care of my garden; spending the money to build my “flower sanctuary” has truly been a worthwhile investment in my mental wellbeing.

Why I Founded Midlife Magazine

I founded Midlife Magazine with the intent to convince middle age men and women that these precious years can and should be the very best years of their lives. With that purpose in mind, I created a one minute introduction video http://youtu.be/Mzt4MImmwzs that I wanted to convey the spirit of fun, excitement, and privilege that fun that is possible during our middle-age years. Yes, middle-age is also fraught with a lot of very serious issues, but this particular video was meant to focus on the positive aspects of this phase of life.

I have asked several middle-age people a simple question: “Would you trade your current life situation to that of your former self from twenty-years earlier?” Would you believe that those I asked this question answered “no?” Of course, one of the obvious reasons why someone would want to go backwards in time is that they would get to be twenty years younger and who wouldn’t want that! But upon further inspection, here are a few more things to consider before making your decision as follows:

  1. Was I happier person twenty years ago than I am today?
  2. Was I in a better financial position twenty years ago?
  3. Did I have as many friends and family surrounding me back then as compared to today?
  4. Was I more grounded and at peace with myself as a person?
  5. Was I able to make more meaningful contributions to society?
  6. Have I been able to travel and see more of the world?
  7. Did I have more decision making power?
  8. Did I have more leadership opportunities?
  9. Was I able to make a bigger difference for good in my home, community, and world?
  10. Did I appreciate life more?

It’s not reasonable to think that every single aspect of your life is better now than 20 years ago. Truth be told, yes, I would definitely like to have a body with twenty less years of “mileage” on it. But comparing apples to apples, I venture to guess that most of you have more good things going for you now than you did twenty years ago, and that’s my point! Middle age is THE BEST PHASE OF YOUR LIFE and should be appreciated and enjoyed having that understanding. So here’s to the best years of our lives, folks! Here’s to Midlife Magazine!

Selective Short Term Memory

Let me share another one of my secrets with you: I have selective short term memory.

I recently invited one of my guy friend and his family to my son’s baptism and he said “yah that’s awesome, I’ll see you there.” I later came to find out from his wife a day before the event that he never gave her the message. My buddy’s wife then gently scolded me and said “John, you know that if you wanted us to come that you had to tell me about it, not him…” I am not sure if this Selective sort term memory phenomena is exclusive to men, but I can attest that I am definitely a victim myself. I know this because my wife is constantly reminding me of things she told me to the day before and then the next day I have no idea what she is talking about!

But I digress…the selective short term memory that I am referring to here has to do with
learning the valuable lessons from our occasional failures, but then forgetting about the pain and disappointment that came along with the lesson. Just forget about it, just like you forgot to take out the garbage Sunday night even after your wife reminded you that the garbage truck is coming first thing in the morning.

Each temporary failure is merely another stepping stone effort towards achieving the success or end result that you have your eye on. And I am confident in saying that no winner ever won without failing… a lot. In fact, those who win the most probably know more about pain and the disappointment of failure than anyone else. In my opinion, one of the reasons why a person is willing to keep failing until they eventually succeed is because they simply allow themselves to “forget” the past failures and they just keep moving forward. So here’s to one good reason for being forgetful!

Be the Turtle

As I mentioned in another article about my father, he is full Chinese and was born in Mainland China. As a younger man, my father was the charismatic, handsome, and high achieving academic that had graduated from the top University of Taiwan and had then come to the United States in order to pursue his PhD. He grew up in a very strict household where academic achievement and honor to the family were top priorities.

My parents divorced when I was 8 years old and the court gave my father custody of me every summer until I graduated from High School. Every summer my father would drive from Indiana to Upstate New York to pick me up for the two months. We made that two day drive every summer for 10 years. At night he would pull over to a highway rest stop, and he would sleep in the front seat and me in the back seat. I hated those long boring drives.

One of the first things my dad would ask when we reunited was for me to give him my final report card for the year. If he saw that I got a B or a C he would yell at me and ask why I didn’t get an A? And then the long silence would begin where he would look at me in disgust for what seemed to be an eternity. It was years before I knew what he was saying to me in Chinese, but I was later told that he was saying “as slow as a turtle.” He meant those words towards me in the most hurtful condescending way possible. My father was an academic and performing well in school meant everything to him. The problem during those early years was that I was a troubled and angry young man without a father figure for most of my growing years, and it was a miracle that I even stayed in school.

My father’s insistence eventually rubbed off on me and I did become a conscientious student who tried to do my best in school, but those words “as slow as a turtle” haunted my thoughts for many years when I felt I wasn’t doing as well in school as I wanted to. It was as if I was trying to run away from the negative label that my father had branded me with and it was my destiny to be “slow.”

Many years later as an adult I had an epiphany. Looking back on all the noteworthy things that I had set out to accomplish, I realized that they might not have come to pass when I wanted them to, but almost each goal had been completed, and sometimes even better than I had originally imagined. I then remembered the story of the Tortoise and the Hare from my childhood. I thought, yes, it’s true that the rabbit was inherently faster than the turtle, but in the end it was the turtle who took home the prize. And that’s when I realized it wasn’t a weakness to be the turtle, but rather a strength! I now wanted to be the turtle! Yes, I might take more time to graduate from college, or to recover from this illness or that injury, or to get married, or to make my fortune, or whatever other meaningful end result lay ahead of me in my life, but it was definitely going to happen, and in many cased has already happened because of one simple “turtle” attribute...persistence. Don’t stop moving towards your goal. Don’t stop believing in yourself, your purpose, and the gifts and talents that you were born with and to which you are given the responsivity to develop. Don’t worry about your speed; let the others run while you steadily walk. You are in a race against no one but yourself. Don’t look behind you and become distracted by your past mistakes and regrets. Keep moving forward, even if your progress sometimes seems imperceptible; know that you are on target to arriving at your ultimate destination. Promise yourself that no matter what, you won’t despair and stop moving. Keep moving. Be the turtle.

Neighborhood Watch Neighbors

Several months ago, a very prominent couple in our neighborhood was forcibly tied up by 4 men who entered their home on a dark rainy evening. Fortunately, the couple was left relatively unharmed after the men got what they wanted. The men left the couple tied up in their home before fleeing the house. With time, the couple was able to break free and called 911. I remember seeing the news van outside broadcasting on the incident and thinking to myself enough is enough. Our own home had been burglarized while we were away and I am aware of other families in our neighborhood who had experienced a burglary, but this time it was different. This time the criminals were bolder. There was no sneaking around, this was in my neighbor’s face, and give the intruders what they want or suffer the consequences.

To my knowledge, the role of Area coordinator had been left vacant for many years before I raised my hand and offered to help. I went through a background check and an informal interview process with the police chief and the next thing I know I am the point man for our neighborhood.

Here is a portion of the email that I sent out to my neighbors regarding the Neighborhood Watch National Night Out https://natw.org/

Since I am so new to this role, I was under the impression that the neighborhood higher ups were going to be sending an email invitation out to all the neighbors living within my area of responsibility, but the day before the event I was told that it was my job to contact everybody! On one day’s notice I sent out an email to a very limited list of families who had previously subscribed to the Neighborhood Watch email. The email list was so old that I estimate about 60% of the list bounced back. Here is an excerpt of the email that I sent out to my families:

Hi Neighbors,
My name is John Teng and I am the newly appointed Neighborhood Watch Area Coordinator for our neighborhood. I wanted to extend a personal invitation to you families and your fellow neighbors to come to my home tomorrow evening between 5:30 and 7:30PM to meet other families in our neighborhood, and to also learn how we can all work together to strengthen our Neighborhood Watch program. Please reply to this email so that I can prepare enough snacks for everybody! I am looking forward to meeting you all as well!
Sincerely,
John Teng

To my surprise, with about 24 hours’ notice, I had a group of about 40 total strangers at my house thanking me for taking on the role as Area Coordinator for the neighborhood and asking how they could help me. After all these years without a Neighborhood Watch presence in my neighborhood, it turns out that all my neighbors needed was for someone to get the ball rolling. I left that initial meet and greet with more enthusiasm than ever to do what I could with the help of other concerned neighbors to make our neighborhood a safer place to live for the future.

And I encourage all of you to learn more about how you can participate in your own local Neighborhood Watch programs. Please visit http://nnw.org/find-a-watch-program to find a Neighborhood Watch program near you!

Midlife “Snipers”

I recently watched a documentary about the history of military snipers. The narrator mentioned that enemy snipers considered the officers as high value targets to snipers because to take down a leader not only caused confusion among the ranks of the other soldiers but also was a blow to the fighting morale to the troops under that fallen officer’s leadership.

It soon occurred to me after watching this documentary that there was parallel story that could be drawn middle aged men and women. By the time someone “arrives” in the years considered middle age, they have already lived a considerable amount of life, had a lot of experiences, learned a lot of lessons, made a few friends, added a few family members to their household, made a little (or a lot) of money, and gained some influence and expertise in their chosen vocations or professions. In other words, men and women hold many seats of leadership and influence in society during their middle age years.

Understanding those positions of responsibility and privilege that they hold, it should not come as any surprise that when a middle age man or woman for whatever reason “goes down,” the results are more far reaching and devastating than just the life of that individual. Take for example this story about a hypothetical woman named Amy:

Amy is in her late forties, she’s happily married and the mother of two children. Amy is also well educated and she has worked hard to amass enough professional experience in the corporate world to where she finally felt confident enough to strike out on her own and start her own business venture. Because of Amy’s hard work ethic, it came as no surprise that her business quickly flourished. Soon Amy employed 30 people and had a steady flow of customers from around the world.

As her business grew, so did the need for her to travel out of town to meet with her clients. The business trips sometimes kept her away from home for a couple of weeks at a time. While on the road, she would call home every night to make sure that her husband was holding down the fort with the kids. Her husband also had his own job, and for while he kept a good attitude about the added responsibilities he had at home by himself, but after a few too many of the long business trips, the only thing Amy and her husband did when they spoke on the phone was argue. Both had valid points; they both felt tired, stressed, lonely, and underappreciated. They both felt trapped, the business was flourishing but they both knew their marriage was floundering, it was as if Amy and her husband didn’t even know each other anymore. When Amy came home from a trip it was like returning home to strangers. The stress and long distance relationship sucked the love and intimacy from their marriage. And then one day during a following business trip, one of Amy’s clients invited her to dinner. It was just like a thousand other business dinners she had, only this time this man made romantic advances towards her. Amy truly loved her husband, but that last fight was a doozy, and they hadn’t been intimate with each other in a couple of months with the traveling and then the quarreling when they were together. In an uncharacteristic fit of clouded reasoning and emotion, Amy gives in to her client’s romantic advances.

Here are some of the possible “snipers” in this hypothetical story:

  1. Too much time away from Amy’s loved ones.
  2. Amy having dinner alone with another man while on the road.
  3. Putting the business in front of the relationship.
  4. Amy’s husband not getting help around the house to eliminate some of the building stress that contributed to the quarreling.
  5. Lack of communication between Amy and her husband about how to preserve their relationship while building the business.

And here is a short list of some of the potential “casualties”:

  1. Amy loses her husband who finds out about her affair and files for a divorce.
  2. Amy’s children are separated from one of their parents because of the divorce which adds more stress to their already stressful teenage experience.
  3. Amy has to downsize her company when her husband sues her for half of her business assets in order to raise their two children now as a single parent.
  4. Amy liquidates a portion of the business and lays off half of her employees in order to fulfill the court order.
  5. Amy’s former employees and their own families suffer financially due to the layoff.
  6. Amy’s affair was just a one night stand, and now there is really no one to come home to after a long business trip.

When a middle age man or woman falls for whatever reason (infidelity, sexual abuse, substance abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, addictions, boredom, the reasons to fall are many) he or she takes many other people down with them. Just like a sniper who looks to put an officer in his cross hairs, the middle age man and woman has so much more to lose now than they ever did before during this phase of life. With that in mind, they must be more vigilant than ever to safeguard themselves and their loved ones from the fall.

Frederick Davis

My parents divorced when I was 8 years old. My mother picked me up from second grade during the last week of school and told me that we were going on a trip. She had a suitcase packed for each of us and she had a taxi waiting for us outside. I asked my mom why dad wasn’t going with us and I don’t remember her exact words, but it was evident he was not part of the trip. Yes, living in a cramped apartment with two parents who fought all of the time was very stressful for me, but not a stressful for what was about to transpire in my life.

Being uprooted from my childhood, now living thousands of miles away from my father without friends or familiarity, I was bitter and angry that my mom just pulled me away like that. I suppose my father could have pressed charges against her for doing that, but he later told me that if I had to live with only one parent than I should be with my mother. What I really wanted was BOTH of my parents whom I loved, but who were no longer going be together. Those first few years apart were very difficult for both me and my mother. And for the sake of getting to the point of this story, let it suffice to say that I now had limited access to a strong father figure to guide me through my adolescence, and as a result, I got into a lot more trouble than usual.

Fortunately, a man came into my life named Fred Davis. Fred was a member of my mother’s and my religious faith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints https://www.lds.org/ otherwise known as the “Mormons.” “Brother Davis” as we referred to him, spent most of my years as a youth, involved with our Church sponsored Scouting program. Before I achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, I had spent a total of 7 spring breaks from 6th grade until my senior year in High School in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York on 50 Mile hikes alongside brother Davis, not to mention the countless other scouting activities. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/MeritBadges/fifty.aspx.

And after all those years of campouts, and hikes, and merit badges, here are just a few of the lessons Brother Davis taught me that I have since taken into manhood to help me along my personal journey of life.

  1. Take care of and appreciate nature.
  2. Sing a song and sing it with heart.
  3. Never leave a straggling hiker behind.
  4. Be frugal with your money.
  5. Don’t be ashamed to pray towards a higher power for thanks and help.
  6. Start your day early in the morning (I’m still working on this one).
  7. Being prepared pays off.
  8. Don’t use foul language (I could do better here, too:)).
  9. Learn from last year to improve for next year.
  10. Finish what you start.
  11. Know how to improvise when necessary.
  12. Appreciate simple things.
  13. Love God.
  14. Lead by example.
  15. Serve others selflessly without asking for anything in return.
  16. Smile.

Ironically, Brother Davis never personally achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, but that way he described its value and importance to us kids, he made it sound like achieving it was like winning a gold medal at the Olympics. And because of Brother Davis and other leaders who selflessly gave of their time to serve our Boy Scout Troop, I was able to complete my Eagle Scout rank which gave me a solid college level education before I ever graduated from High School.

Many years later I had a bitter sweet conversation with his Brother Davis’ daughter who informed me that her father had passed away from the cancer. She confided in me after his death that she was jealous that her father spent so much time involved in the Boy Scout program, but she felt good that her father’s influence was helping so many other people. I told her that her father’s selfless service would continue to live on through the lives of the countless young men that he mentored throughout the years. I am a better man because of Brother Davis being there for me when I was an angry, troubled young boy.
Thank you Brother Davis.

Six Pack Fitness (The Innovator 500 bag option)

Whether you are preparing for an athletic completion, or you just want to keep your nutrition on point while you are away from home, then Six Pack Fitness has very innovative and stylish carrying options to help you do so.

I purchased the Innovator 500 bag because I compete in the Men’ physique category of body building and I wanted a way to conveniently consolidate all of my nutrition in one convenient carrier, and this product fit the bill. As an experienced Men’s Physique competitor, I put together a quick review to help you determine if these bags are for you:

Pros:
• Convenience. Everything you could possibly need to take on the road in terms of your nutrition can be found in one of their many different bag dimension options.
• Style: All of their bags come in many different colors including pink, as well as the new Expert Renee Tote which caters to the professional women who wants to carry something that looks more like a stylish purse as opposed to a plain bag.
• Compartmentalized. The innovator 500 comes with 5 separate shelves that to keep your meals neatly separated and organized inside the bag
• Changeable. The shelving in the bag that I own can be pulled out and reformatted to make shorter or taller compartments, depending on the type of custom containers that you choose to use with your bag.
• Spacious. I love the side zipper compartments that allow me to pack 48 ounce Nalgene bottles inside the bag. Two of those bottles full of liquid placed into one of those compartments will get me through most of the day. And the other side compartment could then allow you to add other large miscellaneous items like fruit, paper towels, and silverware, without having to cram everything into the separate plastic containers.
• Insulated. The bag is entirely lined with insulation to help maintain temperature while you are without refrigeration on the road.
• Other great features include s freezable gel packs, a shoulder strap; and the snap lid container option which are BPA/ PVC free (this options was an additional fee when I purchased my own bag).

Cons:
There aren’t many, but there are few, at least with the bag that I own as follows:
• The top hand hold is connected to the supplement zipper compartment, which means that if I hold the bags full weight using that strap, then I am putting the entire weight of the bag on that zipper connection, and I am not sure how long it would hold up carrying the bag like that, especially if the bag is really loaded up heavy?
• The supplement container is not large enough and the small compartment walls do not allow for modifications to the dimensions, deepening on what I want to put in this area. For example, I would like to see a much deeper compartment here that allows me carry around small bottles and sealed packages of supplements that I use daily but the compartment. This would save me time in an already time consuming food preparation process, as opposed to wasting time putting lots of small things in lots of small baggies.
• Again on the supplement container, because the space is so limited here, I could see how some people might resort to putting opened supplements in this area, meaning that they would have to use their bare and possibly dirty hands to pull supplements out of the bag, and I don’t like that.
• The snap Lid container options are made out of plastic and I don’t feel comfortable putting them in a microwave to heat up the food if I have that option. I wish that Six Pack Fitness sold an option to purchase glass containers with plastic lids, but you can certainly look around and purchase that option from another source if you need to.

rs1

This particular model retails for around $ 110.00 at the time of this writing, and if you are serious about controlling your nutrition on the road then you should seriously look in to these bags. Go to http://www.sixpackbags.com/

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 Review

You can find a hundred car reviews on the internet about the 2011 Porsche Carrera 911 GT3 or for any other car for that matter. But reviews will be different. I’m not going to recite endless technical facts about brake horsepower or how many seconds to get from 0-60mph. The car that I’m reviewing below is my car, or was my car, until I sold it to a neighbor who then became a good friend of mine!

Now to my middle age man review of this beast:

Let’s start with some of the cons:

1. Space: The car appears to have a back seat area, but only enough to throw a backpack and a brief case. And if your over 6 feet tall, sitting in this car will feel more like being in a sardine can than a race car.

2. Cost of Maintenance: Soon after I sold the car, my new buddy told me that one of the wheels picked up a nail and had to be replaced at a cost of about $500.

3. Ground Clearance: Make no mistake this car is a race car and is often taken to the track, even by weekend warriors, for just that purpose. My version of the car did not come with the front end lift that increases the front spoiler’s clearance with the ground when going over speed bumps, or even just tyring to pull in and out of your driveway. I had to approach both obstacles at almost a dead stop and at a 45 degree angle or risk scratching the front end of the car.

4. Gear Shifting: I’m not the world’s strongest man by any means, but I get to the gym once in a while to lift weights and I also compete in Men’s Physique events. The first week that I drove this car, my elbow hurt from how hard it was to shift from gear to gear. I asked Porsche about this and they told me that this was an intentional design in order to make the gear box so tough for a race track that it wouldn’t break down in a race. The newest version of the car now comes with electronic shifters, which eliminates that issue, but the GT3 purists don’t like it.

Now for a few of the Pros:

1 Looks. Let’s be honest, if you like this car then you like hot. And as far I’m concerned, the Carrera GT3 is the hottest looking car that Porsche has ever made, with the two exceptions of the Porsche GT and the Porsche 918 Spyder.

2. Sound. One of the irritations that I have with Porsche is that they intentionally give some of their cars more of a visceral sound than others. I also drive a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. It is the top of the line for their SUV models, but it doesn’t make any noise? And then you pull up next to a Porsche GTS and the thing sounds like it has a rocket under the hood? Maybe it’s just me, but a race car should not only drive like one, but also sound like one, too! And you’ll get all the sound you ever wanted when you step on the GT3’s gas pedal.

3. I already made the disclaimer that I wasn’t going to get into the technical details, but we cant ignore the subject of speed. Let me start and stop this comment with four words: fast, fast, really fast!

4. Excitement. Regardless of whether you would ever plan to take this car out on to an open track, the moment that you sit way down low into the driver’s seat, and turn on the engine even to just listen to sound of the car at idle, you will FEEL like you are a race car driver! It was a bittersweet moment for me when I sold this car. On a scale of 1-10 on the fun meter, this car is an 11.

Louis Zamperini

Several years ago I had the honor to meet Mr. louis Zamperini in person and shake his hand. I worked in his hometown and Mr. Zamperini was a hometown hero. The local airport was even named after him, Zamperini Field, otherwise known as Torrance Airport. Years before a movie was made about him, I had heard about his heroism and wanted to someday meet him. That day came unexpectedly when I took my family to see a World War II B-17G that had flown in to Zamperini Field for an airshow. When we arrived, Mr. Zamperini was there meeting with airshow guests. Right after we shook hands and took a photo he was whisked away by his assistant.

rs1Laura Hillenbrand’s recounting of Mr. Zamperini’s life in her book entitled Unbroken, which is also turned in to a motion picture, was nothing short of astonishing. What makes this story even more incredible is the painstaking time that Ms. Hillenbrand invested in to researching the information about Louis Zamperini that she portrayed in her book. The back of the book lists 405 references to articles, letters, interviews, and books that support the amazing life of this American hero.

Louis Zamperini was a wild child that was given the opportunity to use his talent for speed to channel his yoiuthful energies towards an ambitous goal- the Olympic games. Unfortuntately the start of World War II diverted his training and he joined the Army Air Corps. The plane Louis had boarded for a search and resecue mission had a mechanical malfunction and crashed into the ocean and he and two toehr air crew were the only on board to survive. Louis and the pilot miraculously lasted 46 days at sea with minimal rations and survival gear to start the ordeal, after which they landed in enemy territory where they were immediately taken hostage. What happens next can only be summarized by saying that Louis Zamperini underwent daily torture, malnutrition, freezing cold and sweltering heat in squalid living conditions, constant physical torture as well as psychological abuse at the hands of his captors. Honestly as I write this I don’t think that I would have lasted a month in these nightmare living conditions, but Louis Zamperini held on for more than two years and I believe that he would have kept holding on if the enemy hadn’t surrendered and he was sent home.

Louis had every right to be angry for everything that had happened to him because of the war and his brutal treatment at the hands of his captors. But the book comes to a close with Louis returning to Japan after the war to face his captors who were now in prison themselves. And at that moment, Louis realized that his heart had forgiven these men for what they had done to him, and I doing so, the conflict and pain that still raged in his heart even after the war was finally over.

Louis Zamperini’s life is a lesson about determination, redemption, resilience, and forgiveness. I am honored that I had the privilege to meet the real man before he passed. Louis Zamperini is a man for men and women of all ages to remember and model themselves after.

Rudy Reyes

Have you ever wondered why two different people, growing up in the same set of life circumstances: environments, educations, family situations, etc. can end up living drastically different quality of lives as adults?

I read an amazing book entitled Hero Living written by a man named Rudy Reyes. A portion of the book describes his own childhood wherein his parents divorced when he was a young child which left him and his sibling brothers in the hands of foster parents. He somehow took custody of his brothers and raised them by himself. He spoke about how his purpose in life at that time was to see to the needs of his younger brothers because they meant everything to him. He became a state champion high school wrestler, learned martial arts from a Kung Fu master and later was accepted in to the elite Special Forces unit of the Marine Corps called Force Recon. He recounted some of his hardships he faced as soldier. Jumping out of a helicopter into open water and swimming 10 kilometers in a heavy backpack to reach shore. During the day he would hide in holes for long periods of time and in extreme heat conditions, and then he would emerge out into the darkness and patrol through the night. Rudy went on to serve three combat tours of duty with the Marines and then resumed a civilian life as a highly sought physical trainer, public speaker, actor, and military advisor. Having learned this much about Mr. Reyes, I consider him to be the epitome of an achiever as well as a survivor both qualities I hold in the highest regard.

Here is a guy who had all of the cards stacked against him even from the time of a little child. Everything in his life from the start should have doomed him to a life of failure, disappointment, sadness and defeat. But instead, the accomplishments of that same man indicate a different outcome.

The reality is that each one of us has the ability to react to outside stimuli any way that we choose. You have read and heard of countless examples of people who come from the finest backgrounds of privilege and opportunity, and who lose it all because of the bad decisions that they make in life. And you know of others, similar to this fine man who I am referring to in this article, who take every excuse for failure and turn it into gold. I can only imagine the bond of brotherhood that this man must have with his younger brothers who he singlehandedly raised while he too was only a child. Rudy Reyes is living proof that the difference between the winner and the loser is how a person chooses to react to their circumstances.

Vince Lombardi

One of the books that I hold dear in my own personal library at home is entitled Real Men and was written by R. Cort Kirkwood. In his book, Mr. Kirkwood recounts the masculine virtues of 10 famous men in American history. One of those men is Vince Lombardi. Vince was a devoted Christian who at one time had considered becoming a Catholic priest. On his journey to becoming one of the greatest football coaches in the history of the game, he coached the St. Cecelia’s High School football program in Englewood, New Jersey where he also taught physics, chemistry, and Latin which contributed to a man who was more than just athletic tactician, but also an accomplished intellectual. From there, Lombardi went on to coach football at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York where he collaborated with General Douglass MacArthur on football strategies.

Vince Lombardi was aware that he was not a perfect man and he would be the first person to tell you so, but his players knew that he expected the utmost in professionalism from his players and his players knew that he expected the same from himself as well, and his players loved him for it.

“In great attempts, it is glorious even to fail.”

Vince Lombardi will well be remembered as a person who worked trained his teams with discipline and hard work in order to win football games, but regardless of the outcome of any game, he wanted his players to truly give everything they had to do their best. In his own words, Lombardi said “In great attempts, it is glorious even to fail.” Winning was always the goal, but excellence was the real destination.

Professional Flexibility

Several years ago, my former College of Civil Engineering invited me back to speak to their students as part of the weekly engineering lecture series. The following 6 points make up the majority of what I wanted to convey in my speech of which I am sharing with you today. The title that I gave for my talk was “Professional Flexibility.” It wasn’t the standard technical subject that I personally remember listening to when I sat in their seats as a Civil Engineering student, but it was in my heart to share and the points are just as relevant to day as they were then.

1. Be persistent and work hard.

I’ve carried a version of the following quote Angus J. MacQueen in my personal dream book for years:
“When James Garfield (later President of the U.S.) was principal of Hiram College in Ohio, a father asked him if the course of study could be simplified so that his son might be able to go through by a shorter route. ”Certainly," Garfield replied. "But it all depends on what you want to make of your boy. When God wants to make an oak tree, He takes a hundred years. When He wants to make a squash he requires only two months."
The one thing I think is missing in so many discourses on persistence and hard work is more discussion on the aspect of TIME. If I were to liken my own life to the story of the tortoise and the hare, then I am the tortoise. I’m not the fastest at getting everything done, and I’m not the smartest at the figuring out the answers to every problem that I encounter, but the one thing that have almost ensured my success at anything that I have ever put my heart and hand to is…time. I take the time. And just like the tortoise in that race with the hare, as long as the time is still ticking, I’m still moving, slowly but surely towards the goal, until I achieve my objective. Be the tortoise, my friend!

2. Expect the Unexpected

How many people do you know who are employed at something totally unrelated to what they studied in college? If I were to throw out a percentage from my own experience, I would say 70% of the people that I have asked are now doing something else. Here’s an interesting thought, did all of those people think while they were toiling away at whatever they were studying , that one day, maybe sooner than later, they would abandon, voluntarily or otherwise, all of the hard work and the tuition spent doing what they were doing at that time in their lives. There’s no easy answer to this one, I know because it’s already happened to me more than once thus far. I spent almost 7 years getting a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, living on about $3,000 a year (excluding school tuition and books) if you can believe that for many of those years. All through those hard years I felt like I was sacrificing almost every aspect of my young manhood just to gut my way through that extremely technical major, that my wife reminds me I had no business studying (but that’s a story for another day). And by the time I stood before my Civil Engineering College I was working as the North American Sales Manager for an International Chinese herbal company. Expect the unexpected, time and money spent be damned.

3. Learn to love learning

One of my favorite hobbies is learning new languages. I consider myself conversational in both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. The interesting thing was that I never considered these skills for the potential they presented for me to make money; I studied because I loved. Today, I am in the process of bridging China, and Central and South America for some exciting business opportunities. You never know where your passion will take you in life, so keep learning for the love of it!

4. Develop your interpersonal skills

Put two people in front of me. The two individuals are the extremes on two different sides of a spectrum. One of them is a book smart academic who has no social skills, and the other has no formal education but whom everybody likes. I’ll take the likeable guy 10 times out of 10 to fill a seat at a party, a place at my dinner table, and a position in my company. Because not only do I like the likeable guy, but educated, book smart, and accomplished individuals will also like and listen to him as well. And that type of person, who is liked and held in high regard by others, is what is otherwise referred to as a LEADER.

5. Identify Your True Dreams and Goals.

For a moment try to step away from the real reasons why you are presently doing what you are doing with your life: your parents expected a doctor in the family, you fell into the job after high school and just kept climbing the ladder from there. At one of my high school reunions, I was catching up with one of my classmates who had it all- looks, brains, popularity. She told me that she had become a corporate attorney for a big company and I asked her how she liked it. With empty look in her eyes, she shrugged her shoulders and said “it pays the bills.”
I’m realistic enough to understand the need to pay the bills, but our time on this earth is quickly passes us before our eyes, and even faster as we get older. Now is the time to identify what your true dreams and goals are and to take the small simple steps towards making them happen. Yes, go to work and pay the bills, but when you come home at night, keep the TV turned off and make a plan to do experience all of the happiness that is waiting for those who choose to live a life of passion and meaning.

6. Follow Your Gut.

Did you ever have an experience where you were standing at the fork in the road, literally or proverbially? At first glance you didn’t know which direction to take, but then something inside you told you which path you should take? You didn’t know why, but when presented with the choice, you just knew. Trusting my gut (otherwise known as the heart) hasn’t personally worked out for me 100% of the time, but it has 80% of the time. And the last time that I checked, an 80% is a passing score on most tests. So when the choice comes down to the wire, and all other factors have been thoughtfully considered, listen to your heart.

Goal Setting and Hitting Your Target

Many of you already know that I am very goal oriented person.  I know what I want in life, but I am also “man enough” to admit that I am not necessarily the fastest, strongest, or the smartest person that I know. One special personal trait I do highly value however is my willingness to persevere through difficulties in order to achieve my goals in life- I just don’t stop until I “hit my target.”  I have to admit that most of the time my goals take longer than I anticipate, which may be the result of my overly optimistic attitude, but this same trait has also been one of my best saving graces in times of my toughest personal trials.  Inside my 3-inch thick dream book that is categorized into 11 different aspects of my life, I have included the following quote: “Beyond talent lie all the usual words:  discipline, love, luck- but most of all, endurance.”1 When I was in high school, a math teacher one day asked me what I wanted to study in college and I said “engineering.”  Her response to my answer will be eternally etched into my memory.  She looked at the ceiling and with an exasperated voice said “heaven help us!”  What was so surprising, even to me, was how I reacted to her comment.  It was at that moment that I knew that I was going to be an engineer.  Someone had just told me that I did not have the capacity to do something and, for good or for bad, I could not allow that person to impose a limitation on my success in life. After saying countless prayers asking for help to endure through some seemingly insurmountable personal struggles and failures, combined with and a very determined and disciplined work ethic, I eventually earned a masters degree in Civil Engineering and then passed a very rigorous 20 hours of engineering licensure examinations, collectively referred to as the EIT and the California PE.

Like me, you too, may face people in your personal life who decide to impose limitations on your potential for one silly reason or another:  You’re too old, you’re too young, you’re not this and you’re not that. Fortunately, I am smart enough to distinguish when someone is trying to give me sincere advice, directed towards my best well being, and those who derive no other pleasure than to see me fail in order to justify their own self imposed shortcomings.  In my personal life, l do my best to avoid being around people who I refer to as “dream vampires,” no less vigilantly than one would run away from the plague. I do this because I am a winner and I want to maintain an environment as much as possible where I am around other winners who inspire me to be better and I them. Disclaimer: I am not a winner because I was born to be one, but rather because I do not accept to be anything but one. And I believe that I am the only person who has control over that designation.

Of course, if I were to judge my “success” based on a short term perspective, yes, I have been designated “second place,” “third place,” and a countless number of “no places” for as long as I can remember.  So fortunately, that is not how I judge my success.  My success has always been based on identifying the specific things in life that motivate me, that inspire me, and that make me happy. I then clearly write these things on paper and/ or cut out pictures that help me clearly visualize what my “targets” are.  I keep everything in a three ring binder to view regularly and I am regularly adding items that inspire me, and I also subtract items that no longer motivate me.  I have found the following principle to be a good rule of thumb for choosing my targets:

Images and statements only get to stay in my dream book if they continue to inspire me to spend the necessary energy to achieve the desired result.

But please don’t misunderstand; I realize that most, if not all of my goals requires hard, consistent, and persistent effort to achieve. And I believe that anyone who thinks or tells you otherwise, about any aspect of life’s most meaningful achievements, is either lying to you or is living in a fantasy world themselves.  And the more lofty the success, the harder you will have to work to attain it. A mountain climber who endeavors to reach a difficult summit- if and when he or she actually makes it to the top- arrives at the top sweating, bruised, and fatigued from the long climb, but the breathtaking view at the summit replaces all the fatigue with sheer exhilaration of accomplishing the task. That’s the reward for hitting the target!

Landscape Tree Trimming with a Boom Lift

Why hire an expensive tree trimmer to care for your home’s trees when you can rent a boom lift and take care of it yourself? In my case, I have a part time gardener who helps me on the weekend. I rented the boom lift from a local construction rental yard for about $300 delivered. I did the “driving,” and my gardener did the trimming. The boom lift seemed like a safer option than using a step ladder, or just climbing up the trees since all of my olive trees are planted on steep slopes which would make ladder stability problematic, and well…climbing up a tree and then balancing all your weight with two feet and then leaving both hands free to cut branches is just plain crazy unless you’re a professionally trained circus acrobat!

The Value of a AAA Plus Membership

Last year I was driving our family minivan towards Malibu to attend a birthday party for one of my children’s classmates. We rushed out the door and got about 15 miles from our destination when I realize that the fuel light was on and we were driving on fumes! I tried to pull over but we were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic along the beach. I didn’t know how long the fuel light had been on by the time I noticed it so I was worried that the car could stall out on us right in the middle of the traffic jam which would have ruined our trip and that of thousands of other people trying to get to the beach!

What made things worse was I had my entire family in the car which included my wife and 4 small children, the smallest child being about 6 months old. And all this was happening in the high heat of a July afternoon. I couldn’t believe that I had put my family in this dangerous situation; it was such a stupid mistake on my part.

But fortunately I was prepared…I had AAA Plus! This is an upgraded plan from the standard version of their service that I typically pay for annually, but I had recently decided to make the upgrade because the towing distance is increased and they provide gas if I RUN OUT OF GAS!!! The hardest part about making the phone call for help to AAA was the hour long waiting time which had a lot to do with all of the beach traffic jam that the driver had to get through to reach us.

h9

Once the driver finally arrived he had gas on hand and within 10 minutes we were back on the road and we made it to the birthday party right as most of the people were leaving. Here’ what you get with a AAA Plus annual membership:

• 4 service calls per year

• A tow of 100 miles

• Jump start your car

• Help to unlock your car doors if your keys are inside.

• $100 towards paying for a locksmith to open a locked car door

• An emergency supply of gas

Think of you AA Plus Membership like paying for an insurance policy. It’s one the very best investments that I make every year!

10 Reasons Why “Middle Age” is the Best Phase of Life.

By John Joseph Teng

1. Middle aged people are most likely to be married, or at least involved in a serious, mature relationship, which means that they have access to a confidant with whom they can experience the joys, and navigate the storms, of life together. Loneliness really sucks!
2. Statistics have shown that married people report having better sex and more sex than their single counterparts, which might stem in part to the close relationship of trust that is built from reason #1 above.
3. Time for friends and socializing is scarcer now, but quality can trump quantity. No, you don’t have time anymore to hang out all night every weekend with the buds, but now you can most likely afford to plan more elaborate adventure getaways with the gang, if even just for a few days a year- think exotic race car driving experience in Las Vegas, or a surfing adventure to the Maldives Islands… you call it, you got it!
4. You are now more focused in life. Your younger self recklessly expended a lot of energy where it didn’t count. But now you’ve been around the block (at least once) and you now know what your strengths and weaknesses are. And if you choose wisely, you can now laser focus your strengths and energy to get what you want out of life.
5. This demographic will most likely make more money during this phase of their lives than during any other time period, before or afterwards. And with more disposable income, comes many more exciting opportunities to experience the “finer” things that life has to offer!
6. You have emerged as an influencer among your peers. Whether it is within your own family circle, your workplace, your community, in the political arena, or your religious congregation (or all of the above); and when you speak, people listen.
7. You can afford to delegate non-essential tasks to other people. Pay the gardener to mow your lawn, hire a detailer to wash your car, and now you just freed up 3 hours on the weekend to spend more quality time where it will count the most- with your loved ones.
8. Even high performance race cars need tune ups, so why not you as well? You have financial access to an army of service providers waiting to help you look and feel better. Losing your hair? Get a transplant. Getting a gut? Hire a Personal Trainer. Suffering from unresolved personal issues? Hire a competent therapist. In fact, even Olympic-level athletes can still compete in middle age, and WIN against their much younger competitors, with the help of trainers, massage therapists, dieticians, etc. So use the resources that are available to help you look and feel at the top of your game!
9. You are no longer the “One Trick Pony” that you were when you finally held that graduation diploma in your hands, which would define how you were going to refer to yourself, and where you were going to be spending most of your time for the next few years. Instead of just saying “I’m an accountant,” you might now also add “father,” “mother,” “husband,” “wife,” “aunt,” “uncle,” “taxi driver,” or “little league coach” to your growing list of titles. And all of these additional life experiences make you that much more interesting of a person to hang out with!
10. Considering the fact that we must all share a complicated world full of wars, conflicts, and natural disasters, consider yourself extremely blessed if you even get the privilege to live long enough to experience and enjoy your own middle age years. So enjoy these exciting years to their fullest; you have so many reasons!

John Teng and Stacey McKenzie compete at the California Open Dancesport Championships

Middle age should mark a phase of your life that you stick your neck out and do something new for yourself that breathes some excitement into a daily life focused on the lives of so many other people besides you.

As my “Dancing with the South Bay Stars IV” charity ballroom competition was approaching, my dance partner and I were told about another dance competition that was going to be held about a week afterwads, called the “California Open Dancesport Championships” in Costa Mesa, California http://californiaopen.com/. Stacey and I thought it would be another great opportunity to get out on the dance floor again and compete with the dance routine that we had trained so hard to prepare for. The first photo above shows the dance judges marking our dance routine. This provided us both with wonderful feedback because not only did they give us their hand written scores, but they also added comments about what they liked and what we could improve on for the future.

Here is the link to our official dance scores that evening.

And here is our first place medal!

h6

I didn’t start dancing until I was middle age and I didn’t start winning until I was middle age either. I hope my readers feel inspired to learn a new skill and take on an ambitious goal to keep learning and growing and experiencing the excitant of life during this best phase of our lives!

Hold Yourself Accountable for your own Fitness Success

I love to work out! I can’t imagine a life where I could not get to the gym on a regular basis to keep in shape.  Working out to me is almost as important as breathing oxygen! Several years ago, I decided that I wanted to start competing in amateur bodybuilding so I hired a personal trainer who had experience competing in the sport himself.  I made it clear to him from the beginning that my goal was to use the competition as a fun way to improve my health, but that I was not willing to resort to harmful illegal drugs in order to enhance my performance.  From the beginning, I understood the importance of having a personal trainer. As a newly married man expecting our first child right before the date of my first competition, each competition thereafter has become a more logistically complex undertaking as I now have 4 children who need their parent’s attention! Ever more so now than it did during that first show, proper planning is a prerequisite. That means preparing my business suit, and toiletries, and my food during the night before in order to be in bed early enough and get enough sleep to train hard the next day.

The first thing my trainer would ask me to do in the morning was to check my weight and measure my body fat percentage.  These measurements gave both of us a report on my progress as I advanced towards the date of the competition.  If the numbers did not look good, I knew that I had to make some adjustments in my exercise plan, my food intake, or both in order to get back on track.  This regular habit of “accountability” helped keep me focused and aware of my progress at all times.

I gained an entirely new level of appreciation of supplementing my competition foods with Sunrider products as I trained for my first competition. I had to eat the healthiest food possible to in order have the energy necessary to work out at a high intensity. And I also needed a high nutritional food source that did not include artificial ingredients and empty calories that would prevent me from achieving the lean muscle mass necessary to pose on stage!

Staying motivated and focused for several months at a time building up to a competition date is not easy. Sometimes my kids didn’t want to sleep when I wanted them to, so that meant that no one got to sleep. Maybe a project at work required long hours in the office in order to complete on time. Time zone changes and unfamiliar hotel rooms during my many business trips also tended to disrupt my regular routine. But no matter where I was or what the challenge, I always knew that when I got back to the gym my trainer was going to be waiting there for me to get back on the scale to check my weight and my body fat percentages and to hold me accountable for my progress! With that type of accountability I was almost willing to do pull ups from the hotel shower curtain rods if necessary in order to work out when I was on a business trip! My personal trainer also provided me with valuable encouragement when I felt discouraged with the pace of my progress. Because I knew that my trainer sincerely wanted me to be successful, and that he wanted to help me win the show, part of the motivation that I had to be successful was to do my best to honor my trainer.

h3

I didn’t take first place in that first body building competition, but in my heart I knew that I had done my best to prepare. And most importantly, the training process had helped me to drastically change my physical appearance for the better, as well as helped me learn how to better care for my body. So even though the destination on competition day was not what I had hoped for, as far as I was concerned, the journey itself was the biggest success!

The Importance of Having a Good Personal Trainer

I love to workout.  I can’t imagine a life where I could not get to the gym on a regular basis to keep in shape.  Working out to me is almost as important as breathing oxygen! A few years ago I decided that I wanted to compete in amateur bodybuilding so I hired a personal trainer who had experience competing in the sport himself.  I made it clear from the beginning that my goal was to use the competition as a fun way to improve my health, but that I was not willing to resort to harmful drugs in order to enhance my performance.  From the beginning, I understood the importance of having a personal trainer.  With the added time commitments I now have with helping my wife raise our young children, the only hour that I have been able to consistently find available to exercise is 6:00 am.  That means preparing my business suit and toiletries the night before in order to be in bed by 10:30 am so that I have enough energy to get up at 5:30 am, throw everything in my car, and be in the gym on time to start at 6:00am!

I gained an entirely new level of appreciation for my Sunrider foods as I trained for my first competition. I had to eat the healthiest food possible to in order have the energy necessary to work out at a high intensity. And I also needed a high nutritional food source that did not include artificial ingredients and empty calories that would prevent me from achieving the lean muscle mass necessary to pose on stage!

Staying motivated and focused for the 6 months up to the date of the competition was not always easy. Sometimes my kids didn’t want to sleep when I wanted them to, so that meant no one got to sleep. Because I knew that my trainer sincerely wanted me to be successful and that he was available to do whatever he could to help me win the show, I can tell you that part of the motivation that I had to be successful was to honor the my helpful trainer.

And this same principle also applies to any other aspect of your personal development. In middle age we are forced to realize, now more than ever, that nothing is going to stay the same. In fact, my own life seems to be passing faster and faster as each year goes by. And if that is the case for all of us, then that means that either we are going to be moving forward or falling back, now faster than ever! I firmly believe that allowing ourselves to identify good mentors, teachers, doctors, therapists, consultants, coaches, or just someone older and wiser who is willing to offer you advice to help you more successfully navigate the middle age phase of life, will help you and me stay focused on those aspects of our lives to stay in a mode of positive progression throughout our lives as opposed to the alternative.

PMS Isn’t Just For Women

Okay, before you panic, men do not suffer from PMS. They may have to suffer through it with their wives and daughters, but for now, men are spared this monthly curse of emotional upheaval. That said, men do have hormones, and when these levels go haywire, their life can seem to veer out of control.

Researches have been investigating the role male hormones play in the midlife crisis for years and their efforts are beginning to show results. As men age, the chemicals in their brains can be altered. This is usually caused by fluctuating hormone levels. Depending on which chemicals are changed, men can begin to have some crazy ideas and see things differently than what they are. Here are some examples:

  • Some men became seriously co-dependent on their spouse. While men are traditionally more independent emotionally than women, some men in their 40’s and 50’s may begin to experience a stronger need to connect with their spouse on a more emotional level. This can even lead to the man thinking that his happiness depends on how she relates to him. If she fails to give him the support and love he expects (which she most certainly will because his expectations are not realistic), he will feel betrayed and become so angry that he will be willing to walk away from the marriage over nothing serious.
  • Some men stop thinking clearly. As the middle aged man fights internally with feelings of negativity, he may begin to interpret what others say in negative ways towards him. For instance, a simple remark made by his boss may be interpreted as his inability to get the job done. This skewed viewpoint can quickly cause problems in his relationships with others.
  • Some men become more distant. While the middle age man craves support from his spouse and loved ones, he often distances himself from those who can most readily give it. Feeling distant he begins to seek comfort in others – oftentimes inappropriate others.
  • Some men become self absorbed. Men who once thought of others before themselves suddenly become self centered and self absorbed in their middle years. This can make them act like real jerks. Reversing back to an adolescent state of “it’s all about me and how I feel right now,” mode, these men begin to center everything in their life around their own thoughts, wants and needs. This skewed point of view may be one reason why the middle aged man acts out with uncharacteristic behavior.
  • An inability to see the past as it really was. Unable to face the facts of his life, the middle aged man will sometimes look at his life through a foggy lens. Feeling disenchanted with his marriage or job, he may begin to see trouble where none exists. Small issues become big problems in his mind. This offers him the chance to walk away without regret since he perceives his marriage as “always having been horrible” or his job as being “a big mess.”
  • An inability to control feelings of self pity. Middle aged men in crisis are very good at feeling sorry for themselves. Not liking who he is at the moment or how his life is going, he would rather delve into a state of self pity than do anything productive. The worse he feels about himself, the more is apt to act out in inappropriate ways.

If you have been married for nay length of time, you know how hormone fluctuations can cause a woman to seem irrational. The same is true for you! Yes, hormones can take normal thoughts and feelings and turn them into stronger, more disillusioned ones. Being able to recognize that a physical issue could be causing your feelings to take over your thinking ability can help you seek the help or make the changes necessary to weather this storm of hormonal upheaval.

Every time you have a negative thought take some time to revaluate. You may feel like your marriage is a mess, but is it? And if it is, are there are better ways of fixing the problems than having an affair or simply leaving.

Life can get tough sometimes but that doesn’t mean they are horrible. Hormones can make us think things are worse than they really are. Changing your perception and your attitude is a great start to getting things back on track without making any big mistakes that will haunt you later.

You’re In the Power Seat – Now What?

Middle age men have a lot going for them. They have more money … more prestige ... and more power. There is a lot to be gained in these middle years. There is also a lot to lose.

No mistake is small for the middle aged man. One slip up and he can ruin his career; drain his bank account; and lose his wife and family. The temptations of the past now come with more consequences. Yes, an affair in your 20’s could have caused a break-up, but a divorce would change your lifestyle.

The middle age man has a lot of power. His wife and kids trust him. People at work listen to him. Society seeks his input and help. This much trust gives him power. It also leaves him vulnerable to making big mistakes.

Men who become disillusioned with life begin to feel badly about themselves. This is a hot zone that can be dangerous since a man seeking to feel better about himself may begin to use (and abuse) his power to control others. Maybe you use your influence to entice a young woman at the office into an elicit affair; or you begin to shift a few dollars from the company’s accounts to your own. Both of these actions are wrong. Maybe even illegal. Either can result in a loss of trust and respect by those who depend on you.

Don’t let your own power trip sabotage your life. Middle aged men do this all of the time. They begin to think they won’t get caught, or if they do, that nothing really bad can happen to the, After all, their wives love them and will take them back and their bosses know how hard they have worked over the years and will overlook some small discrepancies. Not so fast! Once you break the trust you have with these people they are going to turn on you and you will be left with nothing.

Yes, wives may forgive a fling, but few can overlook a long term affair and multiple lies. Even if they do, there is going to be a price to pay for your infidelity. The same is true at work and in your societal roles within the community. Lose the trust of that important board you sit on and they will get rid of you.

Using your middle age power and influence to get what you want regardless of the consequences never ends well. Look at all of the men who have hit the news in recent years following some sort of scandal. Some were able to regroup and make amends, but most simply fade away, alone and desperate.

Before falling victim to your own scandalous actions take a moment to consider the fallout. What is the worst thing that would happen if you were caught with that young executive or if the accounting department at work suddenly realized that you were adding a few personal items onto your corporate credit card? Your actions may not seem all that bad right now, but consider the consequences. Are they worth it? If the answer is no, then get a hold of yourself right now and stop!

The thought of what would happen if anyone “found out” might be your biggest ally. Many men have avoided midlife crisis pitfalls simply by considering the result of their actions. Buying a sports car is one thing; driving recklessly and hurting someone is quite another. Remember, the impact of your actions reach far beyond yourself. Think about that the next time your impulse is to do something stupid.

That Affair Is Going To Cost You: The Financial Implications of A Mid-Life Affair

It seemed like fun at first. It was that gorgeous young secretary, the neighbor you could talk to, or the divorcee at the local bar. You started talking, exchanged numbers, and the next thing you know… you had started an affair. Now here you are, stuck between your girlfriend and your wife. Not only could this devastate your marriage and dissolve your family, but it can also cost you big time. Affairs are NOT cheap. In fact, many men pay for their unfaithfulness with their hard earned cash and more. So, before you start talking to that beautiful blonde or entering a flirtationship with the woman in the cubical next to you; think about the financial implications of starting a mid-life affair.

Who Is The Woman?

Many men going through a mid-life crisis often have affairs with women much younger than them or women who are also married. They do this because they are unsatisfied and unfulfilled in their marriage. Many see another woman as a source of both fun and excitement; something they do not think their partner can give them anymore. However, the financial implications of dating a younger woman can be severe. Younger women can often get money out of those they have had an affair with by saying they were coerced into the relationship. This often happens when the man breaks it off with their mistress to go back to their wife or breaks up with both women. This becomes even more of an issue if the younger woman works for the older man’s company. For example, a secretary having an affair with a man in the office would be able to get money by saying she was coerced into a relationship; especially if it was sexual. Although this does not always happen, the men it happens to can be out thousands of dollars for manipulating a woman younger than them, especially if they are in a position of power.

Gifts and Luxury Items

Many older men keep their young girlfriends and mistresses a secret through large purchases. Some women receive handbags and clothing while others get housing allowances and cars. Any way you slice it, this is extremely expensive and time consuming. You are paying for this affair not just in gifts and luxuries but with your stress.

Paying the Piper

So, you have had an affair and your wife has left you. She has taken your kids, left the house, and filed for divorce. Because of this she has hired a lawyer to sue you for emotional damage, take the house, and have custody of your children. The only way you are going to keep any of this is to hire your own lawyer and fight back. Many times, however, this will not always help you. According to the Huffington Post nearly 95% of divorces caused by a man’s infidelity end up with the man paying a significant amount of money to their ex-wives. If your affair ends in divorce you can be on the hook for child support and you can have to give up your house, car, or countless other possessions to your ex or sell them to pay out damages. The courts have never been easy on those whose marriages end from infidelity.

Rent?

There are some men who go a little further in order to have an affair. While some men will conduct their affair in their own home, some will actually rent out an apartment or condo for them and their girlfriends or mistresses. This can be pricy and difficult o hide form your wife. In this situation you are paying an extreme amount of money to keep the affair going and you have the added stress of hiding it.

Many men simply do not realize that an affair can cost them much more than just their pride. It can cost them their family and a lot of their hard earned cash. A mid-life affair may seem new and exciting, but it can cost you much more than it is worth. So, before you lean over that cubicle, buy a drink for that pretty woman, or give your number to the neighbor; be sure you understand all of the risks that a mid-life affair poses to you financially and otherwise.

Showing Your Kids That You Care

Kids need to feel loved; and sometimes that means going out of your way to show them how you feel. Not sure how to express your true emotions to your child? Here are 10 great ways to say “I Love You” without actually saying it.

  1. Plan special “you and me” time. It doesn’t have to be a big date, but do try and carve out some one-on-one time with each of your kids. Maybe your three-year-old loves trucks. Take him to the local fire station to see the trucks. Or maybe your teen loves ice cream. By all means, plan an ice scream date. It is simple times like these that will help you build the kind of relationship with your kids that will last a lifetime.
  2. Solicit your kids’ help. Everyone knows that toddlers love to lend a hand. Be willing to let your kids roll up their sleeves and pitch in (even when it makes the job harder). But don’t stop there. As your kids grow, they need to feel as if you trust them with more important jobs. From time to time let your kids help with those bigger – more complicated – tasks. Handle a big job together – be sure to watch your attitude though. Losing your patience or getting aggravated by your child’s inability to get it right won’t help you build the bond that you are after. Be prepared for mistakes and learn to plough through them with a smile.
  3. Listen to your child’s dreams. No matter how goofy they may seem to you, take your child’s dreams seriously. Be supportive and offer guidance. It may be true that your young son will never be a super hero like in the comic books, but who knows, with some encouragement, he could become a firefighter, policeman or some other super hero in today’s modern world.
  4. Leave your kids love notes. No need to be gushy here, but if you travel a lot or come home after your kids have gone to bed, leave a note telling her how much you missed her today; wishing him luck on the big test; or simply leave a note saying have a great day. Occasionally texting your kids short notes of encouragement can also be a wonderful way to let them know you are thinking of them.
  5. Take a class together. No matter what your child’s age, find something you can learn together. Choose something you aren’t good at (or have never tried) to give your child the chance to excel at something where you won’t overshadow him. Maybe you want to learn jazz, or painting, or golfing. It doesn’t matter what the activity, just pick something you both want to learn – or get batter at.
  6. Learn the names of your kids’ friends. Nothing says I care more than taking time to know those in their life. – Just be sure to avoid trying to chum up to their friends; that’s too weird.
  7. Hug your teenager. But don’t do it in public! You may get a weird look or even a blow-off the first few times, but teens need that kind of support and hunger for it, even though they balk at the idea.
  8. Never tell embarrassing stories about your kids (either in their presence or when they aren’t around). Embarrassing your kids is the #1 way to turn them away.
  9. Listen more and talk less. Kids tune out parents who talk too much; but are intrigued by those who listen to what they have to say. This is something that it hard for parents, but kids love it!
  10. Be more fun! Lighten up. You don’t always have to be the strict disciplinarian who’s constantly barking out orders. Take some time to relax and simply enjoy being with your kids.

Showing your kids how much they mean to you requires more than just words – it takes actions. We Dad’s aren’t always good at that sort of thing, but we need to try. As your kids grow, seek out ways to stay connected and keep showing your kids how much you love them – even when you don’t like them much.

Loyalty: the Key to Success

Never underestimate the power of loyalty. It is a vital ingredient to business success. Without loyal customers, your business will fail to grow and without loyal employees, your business will falter. You need people to trust what you have to say; believe in what you offer; and follow your lead.

Developing a loyal following is never easy. It takes hard work, determination and an ability to make people trust you. Fail to follow-through and the people in your life will stop believing – in you and in your business.

Think about the most successful businesses in history. Maybe one was a hotel franchise; while another was a local restaurant. Two totally different types of businesses, yet both achieving great success. What was their common denominator? Loyalty. They worked to earn their customers’ trust and in return those same customers came back time and time again. Their businesses grew as their customers recommended them to family and friends.

Similarly, those same businesses could have never succeeded if they didn’t have employees who trusted in what the ownership was doing. They believed in the goal and worked hard for its achievement. In the end, both employee and management experienced the highest level of accomplishment.

You can do the same in your business dealings. Be the kind of man that your employees respect, and your customers trust. Be fair. Be honest. Be a team player. This doesn’t mean that you have to be everyone’s “pal” or that you shouldn’t stand up for yourself and your business. What it does mean is to be a person of integrity.

Your prime responsibility is to be the kind of leader that people look up to. Never take short cuts in your business dealings, and always play fair. Sure you may be able to muscle out a better deal today; but at what cost for tomorrow? It is these kinds of actions that people notice and respond too. When that big contract comes along, the person you treated fairly during those hard negotiations is going to be on your side.

Don’t be the person who is out to make a quick buck at everyone else’s’ expense.

Treat people with disregard and disrespect and they will remember you for a long time – and they won’t remember you kindly.

Instead, be the kind of salesman; manager; and business associate that people acknowledge; turn to; and respect. People with integrity survive life’s roughest storms, while those who are only out for themselves tend to falter and fade away. Invest in the people around you and reap the rewards; both within your business dealings and in your life.

Pay It Forward

Giving back isn’t just a nice sentiment; it is essential to life. It has been proven that the more we give, the more we get back. This is true in every area of our lives, including business. In order to achieve our dreams, it is vital that we learn to give back to others. Find ways to contribute to others’ lives in a tangible and meaningful way. This means different things to different people

Giving Your Time

As you grow in your business, do not forget to invest in others’ dreams as well. Give your time in helping others fulfill their own dreams. Become a mentor to another entrepreneur. Or if you have a special skill, share it with someone. Sometimes the most important thing we can give is our time. In a world where no one has the time to get it all done, finding some to give away can be a precious gift.

Giving Your Energy

Energy is not always easy to give away –especially when you are exhausted! But, it is an important thing to share. Doing something tangible to help someone is one way to use your energy to benefit the community. Volunteer at a soup kitchen; clean a park; help clean out an elderly person’s garage.

Get the people in your office to pitch in and find a project to work on together. It will help foster relationships within the office as well as give you all a way to pay it forward.

Whether you find things to do as an individual; a family; or business, look for ways to use your energies to benefit others.

Giving Your Resources

It is easy to write a check to local charities or organizations that you feel passionate about. But have you considered ways in which you can use your resources in a more tangible way? Maybe you have some empty warehouse space that a local group could use? When the economy tightened, one businessman found himself with several empty warehouses. He reached out to a local food pantry and sure enough they needed extra space to store incoming donations. Suddenly those warehouses were being used for a good cause.

Another thing to consider: you talents. Are you a dentist that can offer a free clinic once a month? Or maybe you are physical therapist who can donate one afternoon a month to work with elderly stroke victims at no charge.

Think about all of the different resources you have both personally and in your business, and find ways to share them. There is a lot of need out there and if people like you and me would just take a little time to think of ways to share our own resources, many of those needs could be filled.

Take time on a regular basis to look for ways to serve others. In business that may mean helping a struggling employee find a ride to work. Or helping a young student to get an internship to learn the business. Or maybe it means using some of the resources your company has available to make someone else’s life easier.

When service is a commitment made by your entire company, the benefits are great. Paying it forward has a unique way of coming right back at you, often giving you a competitive edge. But be real about it. If you are not authentic, your business will not thrive. But if you serve with authentic enthusiasm and real passion, then you will soon discover that you get more than you could ever give.

Beware of the “Dream Vampires” In Your Life

There are a lot of different types of people in your life. There are those who cheer you on; those who put up (and love) you despite the annoying person that you can be; and then there are the dream stealers. These are the people who – either intentionally or unintentionally – have found ways to convince you that your dreams were stupid, fruitless or even impossible. They are not the people who give you sound advice and who try to keep you from making big mistakes.

Don’t let these naysayers strip you of your dreams during your middle age years and keep you from achieving the midlife success that you deserve! There’s no reason why those “Dream Vampires” should have the power to suck away the positive attitude and energy that you need in your life in order to pursue your own dreams and passions in life! Guard you dreams by first recognizing who it is that are trying to steal them away.

Types of Dream Vampires

I have recognized four types of dream stealers. They should all be watched carefully to ensure that they do not succeed in keeping you from moving forward in your life:

  1. Unintentional Dream Vampires: These people don’t mean you harm you, but they certainly not shy about sharing their opinions, which tend to be a bit negative, no matter why type of advice they are offering you. The good news is that these people are not malicious, and if you gently let them know what they are doing, they will often stop.
  2. Concerned Dream Vampires: There are people (often a parent or a spouse) who try to dissuade you from your efforts in an attempt to save you from disappointment. Their goal is not malicious. Concern is the driving force behind these naysayer’s actions.
  1. Intentional Dream Vampires: These people knows exactly what they are doing and they do it anyway! The most destructive form of Dream Vampires, these people hate to see anyone succeed (other than themselves), and they make it a point to dissuade others from doing something that could lead to success, in an attempt to make themselves seem more important.
  1. Jealous Dream Vampires: unable to fulfill their own dreams, jealous Dream Vampires lurks behind the scenes, doing whatever is necessary to make you fail. Be very wary of these type of vampires; they can be very dangerous.

Safeguard Your Dreams and Aspirations

What do you do when you come face to face with someone who is trying to keep you from aspiring to great things? Here are some simple tips to try:

  • Keep Quiet. Avoid talking about your big plans; new project or endeavors. The less others know about your efforts, the less they can thwart your dreams with their negative remarks and opinions.
  • Forget your failures. Don’t give a Dream Vampire ammunition to use against you. Never tell them about your failures; only your successes.
  • Plan Your Own Attack. Think about what you will say (or do) to counteract what a Dream Vampire says about your plans. Have some witty comebacks at the ready. That should halt their verbal attacks and even if it doesn’t, it will give you the confidence to better handle that negative energy.

Everyone has dreams. As we get older, we feel a need to accomplish them before it is too late. When you find yourself staring a Dream Vampire in the face, be ready to walk away, knowing that your aspirations are worth both your time and energy! The time is NOW to forget what others have to say, and go give your dreams a shot!

How Do You Measure Up As A Husband? Take This Quiz To Find Out!

What kind of husband are you? Not sure? Take this short 5 question quiz to find out how you measure up against 5 traits that make a great husband!

  1. Your wife comes to you with a problem in your marriage. Maybe it is something small like, you didn’t take the trash out. Or maybe, it is something bigger; like she thinks you could be cheating on her. What do you do?
  1. Take a breath and listen. You need to know her side before you respond.
  2. Talk over her to get your point across. You didn’t DO anything! She shouldn’t be jumping down your throat!
  3. Yell. You hate when she does things like this and you need her to know that you are in charge. If she does not trust you then that is her problem.

Correct Answer: A

There are five big traits that make a good husband and listening is one of them. If you do not listen then you cannot respond properly. However, listening to your wife also shows that you care about the problem and are more willing to work it out; no matter how big or small. You are showing that you take her seriously.

  1. You walk in the door and are immediately met with the dreaded question: How was your day?” How do you answer?
  1. You put your bag down, sit down at the table, and talk. Yes, your day has been pretty average but you run your wife through a brief description of what happened. You know she just wants to be included in your life.
  2. Shrug and say something like, “it was ok.” After all, your day was pretty average, you’re tired, you do not want to talk, and you are pretty sure your wife does not really want to hear about your meetings.
  3. Shrug and walk upstairs you are tired, you want some food, and you are pretty sure she will not be hurt by your response.

Correct Answer: A

One thing you should always do in a marriage is to make yourself known. In the first few months of a new relationship you will want to tell your wife anything and everything, but eventually that will fade. Include her in your life and share; your bond will stay strong this way.

  1. Your wife rolls over one night and tells you she scared about being a mother. She doesn’t know what to do and she doesn’t think she’ll be good at it. What do you do?
  1. Turn on the light and talk to her. You know she’ll make a great mom! Also share with her how scared you are about something to make sure she knows she isn’t the only one with fears.
  2. Tell her she’ll make a great mom and not to worry.
  3. Tell her to go back to bed. Who really cares? You two aren’t even trying, yet…

In a marriage you want to be open and vulnerable. Don’t ever worry about something without telling your wife and if she is worried hear her out and share. Vulnerability shows trust, commitment, and deep love.

  1. How often are you and your wife intimate?
  1. A few times a month
  2. Once a month; maybe twice (sometimes)
  3. Once every few months; not that often anymore

Correct Answer: A

The answer “not tonight” isn’t just an annoyance to you, it’s the sign that something is really wrong with your relationship. If you are hearing this phrase several times a months and intimacy has dropped, then your marriage might be struggling. Intimacy is the way that marriages stay connected on a deep level and without it your marriage is more than likely going to suffer. .

  1. Your wife just lost her job, which is vital to supporting your family. What do you do?

A: Offer to take up something else on the side until she can find something. It’s only temporary

B: Get in to a fight about it, but then decide to pick up some extra work after all.

C: Refuse to get another job; you’re already working hard! She’s just going to have to figure out how to cut back.

Correct Answer A:

Marriage isn’t always 50/50; sometimes it’s 30/70 or even 60/40. You need to be willing and step up to the plate to care for your family even if it’s an inconvenience.

So, how did you do?

If you answered mostly A’s then you’re an A+ husband! You know the ins and outs of your relationship and you’re committed to it!

If you answered mostly B’s you need some training. You’re on the right track but you are far from being the perfect husband.

If you answered mostly C’s then now might be a good time to sit down with your spouse and have an open conversation about how the both of you could help improve each other’s commitment to the success of your marriage. Just remember that you, your spouse, and your children are all on the same team, so when one member suffers, so does the rest of the team.

10 Myths That You Don’t Know About Marriage- Advice given by Dr. Brent A. Barlow

Before you get married, you obviously dream about the perfect relationship, and when you got to your wedding day, everyone told you a lot of tips and tricks about how to keep your marriage together. However, they probably also told you a lot of myths about marriage that really are not true, but are often generally accepted. Knowing these myths can help you avoid problems with your marriage, boost communication, and keep love alive. Here are ten common marriage myths and what is actually true.

Myth 1: Marriage Always Changes a Person
The Truth: Marriage does not always change people. In fact, many times what you see is what you get. This is why it is best to really know a person before you tie the knot. If you think marriage will change a bad attitude, laziness, narcissism, or overspending; then you may need to reevaluate why you want to get married.

Myth 2: You Should Not Tell Your Spouse about Negative Feelings
The Truth: If you do not tell your spouse about negative feeling or attitudes then the feelings may not improve. If you are having issues in the relationship or even outside, it is best to bring these feelings to light. Why? This goes back to having good communication. Communication means that you will be able to talk freely about issues within the relationship and find closure to negative feelings, bad attitudes, or other relationship problems.

Myth 3: You Will Always Agree
The Truth: You will never always agree with anyone in your life, your spouse included. If you do not accept this you will never be able to move past arguments or small disagreements. In fact, thinking that you two should always agree may actually hurt the relationship when you don’t.

Myth 4: Marriage Will Always Make You Feel Complete
The Truth: Many people think that their spouse is going to be the one thing that makes their life complete and whole. However, this is not always the case. Marriage and love is only one piece in the puzzle called life; you need other things as well such as family, friends, and fulfilling work in order to have a complete life. Yes, marriage is a piece of this but relying only on marriage will not mean that you have a complete life or that you will always feel complete.

Myth 5: The More Shared Activities, the Better the Relationship
The Truth: This is definitely not true. There will be times when you need space to be by yourself or with friends. Spending too much time together can make even the little things seem annoying or even exciting activities seem mundane. No, you shouldn’t go off for days at a time, but going off periodically for a night on your own or having an activity just for yourself is not a bad thing.

Myth 6: Being in Love Means There Will Always Be Romance
The Truth: Romance and love are not the same thing. Romance is the showing of love, while love itself is unseen. Just because you no longer go on fancy dinners, buy gifts, or shower your spouse with PDA does not mean that there is not love. Sometimes as a marriage progresses, it just becomes harder to show the love than you truly have for your loved one.

Myth 7: If You Have to Work on a Marriage, Something is Wrong
The Truth: No relationship is ever going to be perfect, and when a relationship transitions into marriage, there are many new problems that can arise. Because of this there will always work that needs to be done; even after decades together. If you don’t acknowledge this, you can have small issues in your marriage that can turn into something more serious.

Myth 8: You Can Change Their Patterns of Behavior
The Truth: Many people get set in their ways and do not like to change their behaviors or routines. Just because you get married doesn’t mean that your spouse won’t bring in routines or behaviors from their single life that you aren’t fond of. Accept that there is going to be a transition time for both of you.

Myth 9: Who you Marry is More Important Than When you Marry Them
The Truth: There is some truth behind the phrase “right person, wrong timing.” Yes, commitment, passion, and intimacy are all important to a marriage and if you have all those things it should be able to work. However, that isn’t always the case. If you marry someone when you aren’t financially secure, or are still living with your parents, or are very immature then you may not be able to make the marriage last. If it is the right person, they’ll wait for the right timing.

Myth 10: Being a Housewife is a Waste of Potential
The Truth: Taking care of kids and a home can be just as demanding as having a full-time job. In fact, a spouse that takes care of the house responsibilities work 7 days a week, nearly 24 hours a day, and rarely get a day off. They deal with sick kids, a dirty house, cooking, homework, and many more small things that quickly add up to one big responsibility. Being a stay at home parent takes a lot of skill and dedication to the family. Don’t look down on your spouse just because they would rather stay at home than be in an office from 9-5; it’s a much harder job than you may think.

Now that you know these 10 marriage myths you will be able to avoid them and take steps toward a healthy marriage. Just make sure that you are not expecting miracles from your marriage. Accept that you will have to work on your marriage and that there will be a transition time for you and your spouse.

Drug Abuse Rises in Midlife

The mid-life crisis; these are terrifying words that are equated with divorce, overspending, and depression. It is also known as a time when men destroy their life for material things and give up the good things in life, becoming extremely selfish. However, something else has been on the rise with middle aged men, something much more concerning than flashy cars, weird clothes, or even divorce… drug use.

What Is a Mid-Life Crisis?

Before you learn about what impacts a mid-life crisis you first need to know what a mid-life crisis actually is. A mid-life crisis often happens in men who are between the ages of 40 and 60. This is a time in their life when their bodies are not what they used to be, they have a decreased libido, and they have become very uncomfortable in their lives. During a mid-life crisis, many men begin to find a new, sometimes crazy, sense of fashion, buy what they want, regardless of price, become unsatisfied with their marriages, and often become depressed. This can lead to divorce, serious debt, and the loss of a good life due to poor decisions. The mid- life crisis is all about trying to get a quick fix because you feel trapped or unsatisfied.

What Is Considered A Drug?

Any kind of substance you use that is not prescribed to you in order to make you feel “good” is a drug. From illicit substances like cocaine and heroin to prescription drugs like anti-depressants and blood pressure medication can all be abused. Even alcohol can be considered a mind altering drug if you cross the line into alcoholism.

The Statistics

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIH) drug and alcohol abuse in middle aged men is growing at a rapid rate. Approximately 62,000 men die of alcohol related issues every year and more than half of children live with at least one parent who has a problem with alcohol. When it comes to drugs, The National Drug Control Agency says that in Washington D.C alone, there were nearly 76 drug related deaths in men between the ages of 35 and 60 (the prime age of mid-life crisis), while there were only 12 deaths in men and woman 21-34. The deaths in the 35 to 60 age range deaths have gone up significantly since 2003 when there was almost less than half of these. So, why is this?

Is There A Correlation Between Mid Life Crisis and Drug Abuse?

The statistics make it seem almost certain; there is some sort of connection between the age of mid-life crisis and drug abuse. When a man enters a mid-life crisis, they feel depressed and unsatisfied; they are looking for a quick and easy fix. This is why they dump things from their old life, such as wives and children, to pursue temporary pleasure such as one night stands or flashy accessories. This is also why many married men have affairs; it is a rush of adrenaline and a quick fix for their needs. Drugs can provide the same type of “relief” that these men are looking for. Yes, some men may be able to try something and not do it again, but for many, one time is enough to get addicted. They become addicted to the high and to the way they can escape their problems when they use.

Beyond a quick fix, drugs also seem dangerous and rebellious, the kinds of activities that draw in men experiencing a mid-life crisis. The thrill that drugs give and the feeling of rebellion is also what gets teenagers hooked. The feel good effects of the drugs themselves, plus the feelings of “getting away with something” only make drugs that more appealing to those trying to change themselves and add more excitement to their lives.

How Do I Stop?

If you are struggling from addiction because of a mid-life crisis, there is hope for you. Find an addiction therapist who can relate to you and really begin to dig deep as to why you feel you need drugs and/or alcohol. They can also help coach you through other aspects of your mid-life crisis. Remember you are not alone, and you can be helped.

Get “Enough” Stress: It’s Good for You!

Stress. Sooner or later it takes a hold of every one of us. It can make us feel overwhelmed and out of control. It can raise our blood pressure and make us sick. But there’s something else stress can do: it can thrust us forward in life, giving us the energy, motivation and yes, ability to tackle the world. In other words: stress can be good for us.

We have been conditioned to view stress as bad. All we hear is the bad news about stress:

  • Causes 80% of all major health problems
  • Keeps us from healing from injury and illness
  • The reason why 90% of us make a doctor’s appointment
  • Costs $300-plus billion a year

It is true; stress can play havoc with our physical and emotional well being. High levels of prolonged stress will make you sick. But that doesn’t mean that all stress is bad. It isn’t.

Stress is completely natural – and necessary. It is a biochemical reaction caused by the body to help us face life’s challenges. Best known as the fight or flight response, stress results in a rush of chemicals released by the adrenal system when the body feels threatened. It is that quickened heart rate and increased awareness when you walk alone in a dark parking lot. Stress is also the body’s way of protecting itself from germs and bacteria. When something invades the body that can make you sick, your immune system reacts by releasing fighter cells to attack the perpetrator before they can do any damage. Stress is also that overwhelming feeling that can make you irritable, anxious and just plain mad when life seems to be spinning out of your control. This is the dangerous kind of stress that, if left unattended, can cause health and emotional issues.

But let’s look closer at the first two stress reactions discussed. They are what keep you on high alert when facing a dangerous situation, and keeps your body healthy when it is ripe for attack. These types of stress can help you overcome challenges and move forward in life.

The right kind of stress can actually make you a happier person, according to Emmett Miller MD, author of the 10-Minute Stress Manager. In his book, Dr. Miller explains how life feels more fulfilling when a person meets obstacles and overcomes them. A certain amount of cortisol-releasing stress can help you do that. The key to managing your stress is not to avoid it altogether, but to limit it to more natural levels.

People who experience no stress at all in life simply aren’t happy. We all need the charge we get when faced with a challenging experience. That’s what makes life exciting. Overcoming challenges gives us courage, strength and keeps us feeling more vibrant.

So, the next time you feel the tug of stress, don’t fight it. Accept that stress and use it to learn … overcome … and succeed. Yes, stress can be good, so enjoy all that it has to teach you!

Boost Your HCG Levels without the Risk of Injections

Increasing your Hormone Growth Hormone (HGH) can make you stronger, healthier and more fit. The problem is that taking these hormones in supplement or injection form may cause all kinds of health problems. The good news is that you can slowly increase your HGH levels naturally in three easy steps:

  1. Learn to Work Out Smarter
  2. Maintain Healthy Blood Sugar Levels
  3. Sleep Well

The process is simple, yet effective. When you work out in short, intense bursts, your body releases bursts of HGH. And when you can maintain healthier blood glucose levels (without the common spikes and dips most people experience), your body won’t interfere with either the production or release of HGH.

Step # 1: Sort, But Intense Workouts Are Best*

How can you get the most out of your workout? To help boost HGH levels without the risk of supplements, try this simple, yet effective running workout:

  • begin with a light three minute jog
  • 30-second sprint (start with a jogging pace and finish at 50% max effort)
  • Do four consecutive 30-second sprints; be sure to increase your effort with each sprint
  • Do three all-out sprints that give it your max effort
  • Walk for 3-5 minutes to cool down
  • Stretch carefully

* Sprint workouts are very intense on the body so make sure that you get your doctors permission before starting this form of exercise.

Step #2: Keep Your Blood Sugar Levels Stable

Most people experience spikes and dips in their blood sugar levels all day long. This fluctuation is what makes you crave certain foods during the day and also leads to sluggishness and fatigue. Not only is this bad for your overall health and well-being, it can interfere with your body’s ability to produce and absorb HGH. To help your body produce the right amount of growth hormone, be sure to eat plenty of non glycemic foods. This will help keep your blood sugars stable throughout the day, and allow your body to utilize the HGH it is producing.

Step # 3: Sleep a Solid Eight Hours

Of course, we all know that quality sleep is important to good health, but did you know that HGH is mostly secreted and absorbed at night? When you reach a deep sleep your cells can absorb the hormone more easily, offering its full effect.

People think that they can stay up late into the night working (or playing) and it won’t affect their health and well-being. This may have seemed the case when we were younger, but as we age, our body needs this time to rejuvenate itself more than ever before.

Sleep is especially important when it comes to maintaining proper HCG levels. Men get one HCG boost every day; and that comes about two hours into your sleep cycle. The rest of the night is spent absorbing those hormones. Skimp on sleep and you could be starving your body of HCG! Most experts agree that eight hours of quality sleep is essential for optimal health, so be sure to clock in at least 8 hours.

Beating middle age health problems and gut expansion can be done, especially if you work hard to increase your HCG levels naturally. Follow these simple tips and watch as your energy levels rise and your waistline decreases. You will feel stronger, healthier and more vibrant.

Get Some Sleep!

When you were younger sleep seemed unimportant. Then you had kids and you longed for just a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. Now, as you enter middle age, you may revert back to that feeling that there is too much to do to worry about getting eight solid hours of shut eye every night. Don’t fall for this fallacy! Sleep is vital to good health and a good outlook on life. Without enough quality sleep your body will begin to wear out and your mind will begin to wear down.

The human body uses sleep time to not only relax, but rejuvenate. It is during sleep that our cells can repair problems. They can’t do it while you are awake and running – they have other things to worry about then. Fail to get enough sleep and you will deprive your cells of this all-important rejuvenation time. You are going to feel older, more tired and more stressed.

Even if you think missing an hour or two of sleep won’t hurt you, consider that those hours must be made up. If they’re not, your body won’t have the chance to take care of itself.

Want to make the most of your sleep time? Here are a few tips on getting a better night’s sleep:

  1. Adopt an evening relaxation plan. Prepare your body for sleep by doing something relaxing.
  2. Go to bed at the same time every night (and get up at the same time every morning. Don’t stay up late or sleep-in on weekends. That’ll just disrupt your sleep pattern.
  3. Avoid Caffeine – especially from mid-afternoon onwards.
  4. Avoid alcohol in the evenings.
  5. Stay away from stimulating activities at least 2-3 hours before bed (for some people this even means watching TV).
  6. Exercise regularly.
  7. Change your attitude about sleep.
  8. Avoid hard or bouncy pillows that may strain the neck.
  9. Back sleepers should place a pillow under their knees.
  10. Sleep on a firm, but not a hard mattress.
  11. Use lumbar support (a rolled up towel will do).
  12. Make sure that your bedroom has a good sleeping temperature.
  13. Do some deep breathing or other relaxation exercise during the first few minutes of lying in bed.
  14. Consider including in a short afternoon nap – this can help you from getting overtired until nighttime.

It’s time that you took sleep seriously!

Want to Be Happy? Try These Simple Tips…

If there is one thing the middle aged men and women seek, it’s happiness. Tired of simply getting through the day, they want to rediscover the joy that life has to offer. The trouble is, so many of them don’t know how to find happiness.

If you are stuck in a middle age rut and need a jolt toward a happier day – and life – try some of these simple tips:

  • Laugh More. Stop growling. See the humor in yourself (and in your life) and make an effort to smile and laugh more.
  • Adopt a better attitude. Yes, life is sometimes going to throw you some lemons, so give them a squeeze and make some lemonade. Stop letting disappointments turn into tragedies. Adopt a better attitude. You may be surprised at how much better you feel when you make a conscious effort to turn a bad day into a good one.
  • Stop trying to be perfect. No one is and no one can be. Accept your limitations and accept the fact that sometimes you simply cannot do something. When that becomes apparent, shrug your shoulders and delegate that job to someone who can better manage it.
  • Find something to be grateful for every day. It doesn’t have to be a big thing (maybe just the fact that you didn’t oversleep this morning and miss your early meeting). By looking around to find things to be thankful for each day, you are going to force yourself to take a closer look at all of the small wonders you normally pass by without noticing.
  • Accept yourself for who you are – flaws and all. Stop trying to be everything to everybody. Yes, it is important to be a good employee; a loving spouse; a thoughtful dad, but that doesn’t mean you have to fix every problem or make everyone’s life perfect. Be kind … be gentle … be compassionate … and be helpful. But don’t take on everyone else’s problems and become the master fixer.
  • Find the fun in life. Too often we find ourselves stuck trying to just get the job done and have forgotten that life is actually supposed to be fun. Yes, that’s right, life is fun! Forget raking those leaves. Forget getting a head start on that report for work. And forget cleaning the garage. Take the afternoon and do something fun, either alone or with someone you care about. Go fishing; go biking; or simply spend the day playing cards with friends. Today is the day to laugh, love and enjoy!

Life isn’t supposed to be all drudgery. Sure, there are going to be meetings you dread; responsibilities to handle; and chores to get done; But if you want to be happy, you are going to have to let go of some of that and find activities to enjoy; moments to cherish; and people to share it all with. Now, clear that calendar and start enjoying your life again!

Earthquake Survival: Tips and Tricks

One of the scariest emergencies you and your family can face is an earthquake. The intense shaking causes walls to crumple, glass to shatter, and loose objects to fly around rooms. If you are not careful and prepared you run the risk of being seriously injured or even killed. Prevention and preparation is the only way to keep your family safe when it comes to earthquakes. Here are some tips and tricks that you can use to get ready for an earthquake; as well as what to do when an earthquake hits.

Prepare Your Home

If you live in an area that has experienced earthquakes in the past you will know that when one hits, your belonging fly everywhere. Cupboards open up, making your dishes and silverware fall all over the room, heavy furniture falls over, and knickknacks launch themselves around the room. It is important to ensure that heavy furniture such as beds, bookcases, and dressers are strapped down, especially if you live in an area that has experienced earthquakes in the past or frequently experiences severe quakes.

Look for things that can fall over during a quake such as pictures hanging above your bed or a heavy light fixture above your couch. These are danger zones. If an earthquake hits and you are in these places you could be injured by these objects if they fall. The smart idea is to move these danger items “just in case.”

Also, secure items like your water heater, repair possible fire risks such as defective electrical wiring, and store flammable and heavy products close to the floor in cabinets.

Prepare Your Family

Does your family know what to do in the event of an earthquake? Do you? Now is the time to get informed. Identify a safe place within your home to escape to; and figure out how to get there once the shaking begins. Identify safe places you can hide in within each room if a quake is severe and you cannot get to the main safe place. Keep food and water supplies at the ready; enough to last your family at least 72 hours. You should also make a goal for your whole family to learn CPR and First Aid. You could possibly need these to save the life of a family member in a real emergency. Most importantly, teach your children about this kind of disaster while things are calm. When a disaster hits they will already be scared, so be sure to give them plenty of training so that they won’t have to think when a quake hits; their instincts will kick in, and they will know what to do. Just be sure that your training isn’t scary or overwhelming.

Water and Food

God forbid something happens to your home and you are left needing emergency services. If you are in bad shape after a disaster it is safe to assume that there are many others in the same situation. You want to have supplies that with last you for a few days in case it take emergency services awhile to get to you. Plan for one gallon of water per person per day; with enough for at least 3 days. You should also pack purification tablets in case you must drink from a source that may not be very clean. For food, aim to store three days worth of non-perishable items; this often means canned or dehydrated goods. Replenish your supplies every so often to ensure freshness. Store these items in a heavy duty tote.

What To Do After an Earthquake Hits

You can only be so prepared for a disaster and sometimes earthquakes come out of no where. No matter how prepared you are, things still get tricky. Knowing what to do after an earthquake is just as important as what to do before. Some things to do include:

  • Put on shoes; you never know what has fallen around your home
  • Check for injuries to yourself and to members of your household. Treat them with appropriate first aide if possible.
  • Open all closets and cupboards with caution
  • Clean up anything that has spilled such as drinks, medications, and cleaning supplies
  • Clean up any broken glass
  • Secure light fixtures and heavy objects
  • Once you take care of your home, check on your neighbors

Earthquakes can be terrifying for you and your family. It can cause destruction and turmoil in your home. Luckily, being prepared can keep you and your family safe, even when the damage is widespread. Develop a plan, and be smart; that’s how to successfully survive any disaster.

The Problems and Solutions of Insurance

Insurance: everyone needs it; but few people understand it. Insurance for you home, car, and other things is extremely important. Emergencies do happen and you need to be prepared. One of the ways you can be prepared is to understand insurance, the types of policies you can take out, and the problems and solutions of each type of insurance.

Problems With Medical Costs

The biggest problem with medical costs is that your policy has rules, and failure to follow these rules can actually invalidate your policy. Invalidating your policy, even on accident, will leave you with 100% of your medical costs; which is not possible for the average person.

Solutions to Medical Costs

Your best option is to play it safe. Comb through your policy and read the rules. Know what you can and can’t do before you get sick; not after.

Problems With Your Home

  • Replacement Cost insurance does not always cover 100% of the items in your home. Many policies simply cover what the company sees as big or important item. This could mean that you are left with many costs to replace items that your insurance company will not.
  • Homes that are vacant for 30 or more days are considered abandoned. If your home is the victim of a disaster when you are away, your insurance company may not pay to replace your home or the items within it.
  • Did you know that damage caused by trees is not covered by most insurance? They will not pay to repair your home/property or pay to have the tree or other vegetation removed. Trees and shrubs are covered if they are downed by fire, but it can often take months to be paid for it.
  • Oftentimes floods are not covered under homeowners insurance. Water damage is often covered but not enough that would pay for what would be damaged in a flood. This can easily leave you with a stack of bills you just can’t pay.

Solutions to Your Home

  • Take out a policy that is for sure going to cover most or all of the items in your home. Do not just take out the first policy you read about; compare and contrast several to pick the best option for you and your family. Make sure it covers your home, the items in it, and your property.
  • If you are going to be away from your home for an extended period make sure there is someone there to watch it. Hire a house sitter or ask a neighbor to watch out for you. This way, someone can alert you if there is a problem but that way you can also prove that the property was being cared for even though you were not there.
  • Take photographs of your home before you go away or before big storms hit. These can help insurance adjusters determine what exactly is and what is not covered. It can also help you get paid faster in the event of a fire.
  • If you live in an area that floods easily and is plagued by storms, considering taking out flood insurance. Also, if there is water damage that starts inside of your house do NOT reference the water as a flood. The term will immediately flag the event with the insurance company and you are less likely to be paid for it.

Problems With Your Car

  • Most car insurance only covers your personal car. Your person is covered under certain parts of your policy for when you drive other cars. However, if you total a car you do not own (such as a friends, or rental car) that is more expensive than your personal car; your insurance may not cover the damage.
  • Filing small claims can actually cost you. If you are in a small fender bender that only costs a very small amount, your deductible is more than likely going to rise for more than you collected.
  • Your premiums can be raised by even small traffic violations. Small things such as speeding tickets or parking tickets can loose you a “safe driver discount” and result in higher premiums and deductibles.

Solutions For Your Car

  • You can choose to not drive more expensive cars than you own; it is possible but can be inconvenient. You can also choose to get an insurance rider or take a collision waiver if you rent a very expensive car.
  • Pay for small issues such as cosmetic work or small fender benders. You should be saving your insurance for large claims. That way your insurance will only jump once or won’t jump much because you prove you do not often need it.
  • If you have a lot of small traffic violations consider mistakes that you may be making. You may even want to consider taking a driver’s education class to prove that you want to improve. These classes can subtract points from your record and possibly lower your premium.

Keeping Valuable Records Safe

You never think that you are going to be a target of a disaster. You always assume that the fire or flood will happen to a neighbor and that the earthquake or tornado will hit a different part of the country. However, disasters happen every day and often to those who least expect it. If you are not prepared then you run the risk of not only losing belongings but also important documents that you need to have.

What Documents do I Need to Protect?

There are 22 essential documents that you need to keep safe. When you need these documents—you need them. There are no excuses to not have them. If disaster strikes these are the papers that need to be protested:

  • Property Records
  • Stock and Bond Certificates
  • Copies of Household Members Wills
  • Financial Contracts and Promissory Notes
  • Diplomas and Degrees
  • Household Inventory
  • Important Bills of Sale
  • Death Certificates
  • Birth Certificates
  • Household Social Security Cards or Immigration Papers
  • Marriage and/or Divorce Certificates
  • Government Savings Bonds
  • Military Records
  • Car Titles
  • Copyrights and/or Patents
  • Your Own Passports
  • Citizenship Papers
  • Income Tax Returns (within the past 7 years)
  • Adoption and/or Custody Papers
  • Retirement Records
  • Religious Records
  • Insurance Policies

You should also aspire to keep a checklist of all your essential papers. This way you can check periodically to ensure that all documents are accounted for.

What Is A Household Inventory?

Many people have not heard of this term before and do not understand why this would be an essential document. A household inventory is extremely valuable to have especially in the midst of disaster. The inventory should be up to date and list all the important items in your home. Important items would include but not be limited to the following:

  • Lawnmowers
  • Furniture
  • Jewelry
  • Tools
  • Appliances
  • High Value Artwork

You inventory should also include the model, date of purchase, and serial numbers of the items. If you want to be very thorough you can also includes pictures of each items. This inventory can be used to determine if you have enough insurance to cover the items in your home and also helps you to remember everything that needs to be replaced.

How to Protect These Documents

The easiest way to protect these important documents is in a fireproof safe deposit box. These boxes are made of a hard plastic that is fire resistant. They can survive fires, floods, earthquakes, and tornados; even when your other belongings have been destroyed or damaged.

These essential documents are important for various reasons. If you home happens to experience a disaster, losing these documents could be a tragedy. It is important to keep a checklist of these documents and the documents themselves inside of a safe deposit box that can survive almost any disaster. This way, when you need your documents you know where they are and you know they are safe. Being prepared can make surviving a disaster much easier.

What’s Wrong with Men These Days?

Middle aged men are out of control … and they are paying the price. You see it everywhere you look: your neighborhood; workplace; even in the church. Men are having affairs; going into debt; and basically running their lives into the ground. What is driving these men to speed toward the cliff -- and over it?

Midlife is a time of change; the kind of change many men can’t handle. As men reach this stage in their lives they have more freedom. Their careers are on a solid track and their positions often allow them more ability to come and go as they please… their kids are older giving them more time to spend doing the things they love … they have more money to spend … and their wives feel secure enough in their relationship to not ask many questions. This leaves the middle age man able to pretty much do as he pleases. This should be the time of his life. Unfortunately, I have watched as too many men use this power to destroy it all – their marriages … their families … and even their careers.

Middle age men are restless. They look back and see all of the things left undone; and when they look forward they fail to see the possibilities of renewal. Instead all they see is a life filled with drudgery and boredom. The man who has accomplished his dreams feels as if the excitement of the hunt is gone; while the man who has failed to live up to his so-called potential feels as if life has passed him by. This leaves guys looking for more. The problem is they look in all the wrong places.

At no other time in his life does a man have more money, influence, power, responsibility, stress, and yes, temptation. Add to this the physical and emotional changes he is going through and the result can be disastrous.

Men are doers. They believe in going out and conquering the world. Give them too much or too little to accomplish at this stage of life and they are bound to fight back. The overwhelmed middle ager fights for his freedom; while the accomplished middle ager fights to keep his standing in his world.

Everyone knows a middle age man who seems to have lost his mind. He begins to act like a teenager again. Everyone sees it (and many snicker behind his back). Yet, few actually try to stop him from destroying what he has built. Maybe it is because it is too much fun to watch him implode. Or maybe it is simply because he won’t listen even if you try.

Middle age men are in the fight of their lives. They are restless and unbalanced and they are careening down the hillside out of control. There is too much chaos in their heads –and their lives – and in an attempt to fix it all they usually only make things worse. This makes them angry and frustrated, which only adds to their problems.

Ask a middle age man in crisis about his life and he will spew out all sorts of negatives; his job stinks; his wife is boring; his house is falling apart. In most cases none of this is true. His perceptions have been altered by boredom; disillusionment; and yes, even his hormones. Feeling as if time is running out, the middle aged man tries to grab at the last remnants of his youth in order to feel whole. A better approach might be to enjoy this unique phase of life. Middle age really isn’t bad – for most it can be a time of freedom, enjoyment and pleasure. The key to surviving the transition from youth to maturity is to accept this time of life for what it is and relish the benefits it offers.

By this stage of your career your job is set and people come to you for guidance. Maybe you aren’t in the trenches day in and day out, feeling the exhilaration of the chase as you did earlier in your career, but instead of wallowing in what has been lost, enjoy the freedom that comes with this richer position. Many men find their 40’s and 50’s to be a time of stagnation in their careers as they reach the level they will stay at for awhile. This isn’t all bad. It means you can relax. You’ve reached the top, now enjoy it!

Men married 20 or 30 years often become disgruntled with their wives. The excitement is gone. Things have become mundane both in their day to day dealings with their spouse and in the bedroom. Having known each other for so long, everything becomes comfortable. Suddenly, the middle age man is on the prowl for more excitement; which often involves an affair with a younger woman. The problem is that men at this age also need a deeper relationship. The sex is great, but the affair usually peters out when he can’t connect on any other level. Instead of looking for excitement elsewhere, wouldn’t a better strategy be to create more excitement in the relationship you already have?

The middle age man is looking for something that he can’t quite explain. Too often he throws away what he has in search of what he wants, only to realize too late that with a few changes he had the exact life he was after.

What’s wrong with middle age men? They are in transition and that transition is hard. They feel lost and they don’t know how to find their way. So what is the answer? I believe it is important for the middle age man (and those approaching this danger zone) to recognize the changes they are experiencing –and the way these changes are making them feel – and work hard to avoid the pitfalls that lay ahead.

Surviving middle age does not have to mean giving up your dreams or settling for an unfulfilling life. It does require taking a good hard look at yourself and deciding what you want out of life and making a realistic plan to spend the next phase of your life going after those dreams.

Entering middle age shouldn’t throw you into a frenzy of panic. You have plenty of time to get what you want out of life. The key to getting it is to acknowledge the stage of life you are in, and embrace it for all it has to offer. Quitting your job; getting a new partner; and becoming a whole new entity is not the answer. Finding ways to incorporate new experiences and new dreams into the life you already have is.

Am I Doomed for a Midlife Crisis?

Midlife is fast approaching and you notice that a lot of guys you know between the ages of 45-55 seem to be acting, well, a bit unusual. They may be sporting a new younger hairstyle or clothing choices or maybe they are suddenly reverting to their adolescent personas. Some may be becoming the butt of jokes around the office about their “midlife crisis,” while others may actually be ruining certain aspects of their lives. If these otherwise “normal” guys are acting so strangely, you may be wondering if a midlife crisis is inevitable.

The statistics are clear: about 85-90% of men in this age range do seem to experience some sort of upheaval. They may begin to question their past choices, or fall into the trap of boredom and complacency. Both can leave a guy thirsting for ways to reignite the excitement in their lives – and that can be dangerous!

Just because you find yourself taking stock of your life doesn’t have to send you into a tailspin. The good news is that while revaluating your life is normal at this age, only about 15% of midlife men are actually considered to have a full meltdown. Still, any time a man begins to question his happiness, turmoil may result.

So what is midlife turmoil all about? Basically, it is the feeling that your life should offer more. Maybe you had dreams and plans that got sidetracked over the years or you have been lucky enough to accomplish your goals only to be left wondering “what next?” This conflict between expectations and reality can send some men reeling off the deep end, desperate to find the “it” he longs for, no matter what the cost.

We have all seen the stereotypical midlife crisis man on TV. He is an older, balding gentleman that usually sports a thicker middle. Bored with his life as it is, he goes out and buys some new clothes (that rarely fit well); or maybe he buys a motorcycle and begins acting like a teenager again. The most common signs of a midlife crisis are of course the affair with the younger woman. Bored with his sex life, he goes out looking for a better, more interesting and a younger mate, thinking that more and better sex is going to solve all of his problems and make him feel better about his life. It rarely does.

Quitting your job or cheating on your wife rarely offers the freedom that the middle age man craves. Overwhelmed by responsibility and seeking a way out, the middle aged man begins to act uncharacteristic, looking for anything that will make him feel better about his life and himself. The results can be disastrous.

Recent reports show that drug abuse among the 45-60 crowd is growing. Alcohol abuse is also widespread amongst this age group. To make matters worse, suicide rates among middle age men is higher today than ever before in history! The mid life crisis is indeed becoming a real crisis that is not only endangering a man’s self worth, careers and marriages, but his life as well!

Does all this mean that you are doomed to fall victim to a midlife crisis if you are between the ages of 40 and 60? Of course not! Just because you reach a point in your life where you want to make a few changes doesn’t mean you have to buy a sports car or have an affair. Understanding that this is a time of immense change (both physically and emotionally) can help you stave off a real crisis. Acknowledging these changes and finding ways to create a more fulfilling future without simply grabbing at whatever feels good in the moment can help you overcome the negative emotions middle agers must deal with and create a new and better life right now.

What are some of the signs of the middle age crisis that you should be aware (and wary) of?

  • a deep sense of remorse for goals not accomplished
  • a longing to look and feel young again
  • a need to spend more time alone or with new friends
  • uncharacteristic behavior (or spending)
  • resentment and anger ( especially to anyone the man feels holds him back)
  • feelings of discontent at wok; home; and in your relationships
  • a heightened sense of sexuality (or lack of it)
  • a sudden or drastic change of appearance
  • entering relationships with younger people

Watching for these signs can help you recognize danger areas that you should stay clear of. Recognizing certain patterns can help you find more appropriate ways of handling your feelings and making the changes necessary to overcome the sudden urge to break free and discover all of the wonderful things that middle age can offer.

What Does a Midlife Crisis Feel Like?

You feel restless, unhappy, angry, and frustrated all of the time. Nothing satisfies you and you are beginning to dream about quitting your job; selling your house; leaving your wife and well, just walking away from your life. Wait! Take one second to consider this: maybe your life isn’t half as bad right now as you think it is. Yes, maybe all of those feelings really are just in your head. Are you going crazy? Naw! But you may be in the danger of falling victim to the midlife crisis.

Statistics show that almost 90% of men between the ages of 44 and 60 experience some sort of upheaval in their lives sometime during this stage of life. Some create the chaos themselves; while other have it thrust upon them. Either way, life begins to lose its luster and you begin to feel as if changes – big changes – are needed in order to feel good again.

This is not the time to act on those impulses. Midlife angst can lead to some dangerous reactions like losing your job; moving across the country (or world); having an affair and more. Yes, change may be in the air, but take some time to reevaluate what change is good; and what could potentially ruin your life.

Midlife crisis seem to hit unexpectedly, but if you really pay attention you will likely recognize the initial signs of restlessness and dissatisfaction long before any strange behavior surfaces.

There are a lot of reasons why men tend to feel frustrated and unfulfilled during their middle years. A lot of it has to do with feeling overwhelmed with the changes going on in their lives. Maybe you are in your early 40’s with younger children in the house. Your time is not your own right now and you may feel like every day is a dizzying array of tasks and responsibilities. Or maybe your parents are getting older and need more help. This too can sap your time and energy. Older fellows may feel unbalanced simply because things at home and work are calming down. Their kids are off on their own, opening more free time in their schedule and maybe his role at work is suddenly more one of teacher and mentor than go getter. This can send some men into a tailspin.

Add to these normal lifestyle changes, changes in body image; energy levels; and even sex drive and a guy who once knew who he was may suddenly feel like a stranger in his own body – and life. If your not careful all of these changes can upset the norm to the point that a crisis hits.

Whether you are feeling a bit off balanced or you just want to avoid some of the pitfalls that middle age men often fall victim to, understanding what a midlife crisis feels like can help you stay focused and balanced during this dangerous time and keep your life moving forward in a safe and enjoyable way. So what are some of the things you may be struggling with right now?

  • Changing Roles: as we grow older men are supposed to become more settled and secure. We become the teachers at home, work and even society. People turn to us for advice and guidance. This can be a real shock to the 40-something who still feels like a kid himself. Don’t let anyone push you into taking on a larger role in this area than you feel ready for. Otherwise you will become overwhelmed and frustrated.
  • Expectations: when a man hits his 40’s and 50’s he suddenly begins to compare the dreams and aspirations of his youth with his accomplishments as an adult. If his life has taken too many detours he may begin to panic believing he will never fulfill his dreams – and that panic can send him reeling into a world of despair and unpredictability. If you are feeling lost set some tangible goals for the weeks and months ahead. Juts because you failed to fulfill a lifelong dream thus far does not mean it is not attainable. The trick to accomplishing it is not to jump headlong into something out of fear, but to approach it with focus, determination and a plan.
  • Health & Body Changes: you look in the mirror and wonder who that guy is. Maybe you’ve lost a bit of your hair, or your stomach isn’t as flat as it used to be. Or maybe you find yourself enjoying a Sunday afternoon nap these days (ughh). The fact is that you are growing older and that is going to result in some changes. Your metabolism is slowing down and that may result in your gaining a few extra pounds and having less energy. The good news is that a lot of the physical changes you are experiencing can be stopped and even reversed – with some work of course.
  • Work & Careers: You spend most of your adult life proving your value at work and then when you hit your prime, you find yourself competing against all of those younger fellows with your bright fresh ideas. Doesn’t anyone appreciate experience anymore? Of course they do. But your role at work is changing and unless your embrace your new role as leader, you are going to feel pushed aside and even become fearful of losing your job.

Change may be what causes a midlife crisis; but it can also be what pushes you toward new experiences. Life is a journey. When you recognize that change is at hand (and don’t fight it), you free yourself to enjoy the road ahead. You may be feeling unsettled right now and decide to make some changes. That’s fine. Just be sure to make rational ones rather than ones dictated by your fears and anxieties.

Are You Experiencing a Midlife Crisis or Simply Midlife Changes?

Life is full of experiences. Without them the journey would not be nearly as entertaining. Sometimes though, these experiences cause changes that seem to uproot everything you know. Change can be chaotic; but it doesn’t have to cause you to doubt your life or your relationships.

Let’s face it, guys like to be in control. They do not like to admit that they don’t know something (like where they are) and they don’t like to ask for help (or directions). So when life suddenly seems to veer out of control they can find themselves lost.

Men in their 40’s and 50’s face a lot of new challenges. Kids grow and leave home; job responsibilities become more leadership oriented; marriages ebb and flow; health issues arise; parents die; and society suddenly places more expectations on the middle age fellow to have his act together and begin sharing his knowledge with those who are younger. Men at this stage of life are supposed to have all the answers – but we don’t!

This can all leave us floundering in self doubt. If left alone with his thoughts, a middle age man will begin to turn inward, seeing every challenge as a crisis. The result can be his determination to finally get what he wants; no matter the cost.

Why the sudden change in the way a middle age man thinks and acts? It all has to do with his perception. He looks at life through a foggy windshield. Everything suddenly seems off. He isn’t happy and he does not know what to do about it. If only he would stop, take a deep breathe and ask for help, he would see that the road ahead is clear. Instead, too many men fall prey to the midlife crisis and begin acting out in the most inappropriate ways. This can destroy everything they worked so hard for over the years: their careers; their relationships; and even their finances.

So, how can a middle age man avert the crisis disaster? First, recognize that this time of life is wrought with change and challenges. That does not mean that your life is in crisis. Keep everything in perspective. Maybe you and your wife are having a hard time readjusting to a world without kids. It has probably been decades since it was just the two of you and you may have to reintroduce yourselves to one another. This doesn’t mean that your marriage is in trouble. In reality, this can be an exciting time of rejuvenation and reconnecting.

Be willing to accept this change (and the others to come) for what they are: new stages of life. Don’t fight it; embrace it. Maybe you aren’t the frisky lover you were in your 20’s that can go all night long. So what? The odds are that your new sexual enthusiasm you feel is more meaningful anyway. Two hours of sensual, meaningful sex is much better than 7 hours of just sex anyway. Don’t believe me? Give it a try!

One of the biggest misconceptions men have during a midlife crisis is that their life is a mess. If you are becoming frustrated at work; angry with your spouse; and disillusioned about life in general, it is time to take a step back and take a closer look. Rarely does everything in your life go wrong at the same time. When you begin to feel like it is, it may be due more to your perception than reality. Remember, the way you look at the challenges life brings is going to influence the way you react to them.

Take a closer look at the things that are bothering you and start to make small changes. Instead of having an affair, try and reconnect with your wife. If you aren’t happy with your job, look for another position, or consider trying something new. Don’t simply grab at whatever looks good. Be intentional with your approach. Consider the impact a job change will have on your family and your lifestyle and talk it over with your spouse. Understand why you want to make the change and think about ways to make it easier on everyone involved.

Trying to fix what is wrong in your life is not bad. That is a healthy approach. Suddenly adopting a new way of life and expecting those around you to follow suit isn’t.

Midlife is wrought with change. Some change you will create and others will be forced on you. How you decide to handle these changes will result in either a fuller, richer experience, or a crisis you have to fight your way out of.

Secrets to Your Success

Want to be the next CEO at your company? Or maybe you simply want a raise. Achieving success isn’t just about working hard and knowing your business well. Most business experts agree that in order to succeed at business, you must also possess these important traits:

  • A Positive Attitude. Negative people simply don’t become successful business partners. Adopt a positive attitude (even when everything seems to be falling apart). No one wants to follow a leader who is convinced the world is about to crumble. People do follow those who act as if they can handle whatever comes their way.
  • Adopt a Plan. Building a successful business or career doesn’t just happen; it takes a plan. Write out your goals and develop a plan. Sure, those plans may change over time, but at least you will always be working towards something.
  • Be Persistent. Success does not happen overnight – it is a marathon of choices, coupled with action. Be persistent in every endeavor. Persistence pays!
  • Learn from your Mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. Even the most successful business people know what failure feels like. Some of the greatest failed many times. What changed for them? They learned from their mistakes and became stronger leaders; more capable businessmen; and ultimately successful.
  • Stay Focused. There is a lot in life to distract us from the job at hand. Stay focused on that project; that promotion and your dream, or you risk failing to achieve the level of success that you are capable of.
  • Be Honest. When people can trust you, you can use that trust to build your business over time.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Try Something New. Every industry changes over time. Be willing to take chances and move out of your comfort zone. Being different and being willing to do things differently may be the only thing that sets you apart from the pack.
  • Work Hard. Yes, hard work is integral to attaining any level of success. Slackers rarely make an impression and rarely achieve the kind of greatness that leads to big success.

For many people, stress is simply a fact of life and an everyday annoyance, but too much stress could possibly have a negative effect on your physical and mental health. Stress can cause anxiety or depression, can cause you to over eat or under eat, and can even make you perform tasks at a lower efficiency than you are truly capable of. None of this is good, and there are many other negative effects that stress can create in your life. You can eliminate stress by taking up relaxing and enjoyable activities like gardening, yoga, or music.

  1. Eat Omega-3

Consuming the proper amount of Omega-3 can have really amazing health benefits. 1. Maintain A Youthful Self Image

Try and see yourself as young, vibrant, and active. Yes, you can admit that you are aging or that there are things you may not be able to do anymore. The more active you stay and the more youthful you think you are, the better chance you have of increasing your ability to live longer.

  1. Set Goals and Try To Achieve Them

Setting challenging yet realistic goals will help give you a sense of meaning and something to do even when it looks like you are not useful anymore. This is especially important as you begin to get older. Without goals, as you get older you will begin to become less active and end up simply waiting for death. Of course, this is not good and is not helpful when it comes to trying to live a long life. By setting goals you continue to challenge yourself, your mind, and your physical limits. Goals at any age give purpose and a meaning to life.

These 5 tips will help you lead a long, healthy, and happy life. If you want to live to 100, these 5 tips combined with proper exercise and diet can help you live to your goal but possibly past it.

The Benefits of Being An Optimist

Every so often we all find ourselves with a “glass half empty” mentality. However, for a lot of people, this mentality goes beyond one or two days and encompasses their entire life. You may even be one of these people; those who wonder if there is any positivity left in the world and if you are crazy for seeing so much anger, cruelty, violence, and negativity in your life. Yes, there is plenty of negativity in the world, but there is also a lot of good. When you see the news story about the shooting downtown, remember that a block over someone was falling in love, getting back on their feet, acing a test, or getting the job of their dreams. For every negative thing in life, there is something positive to counter act it. We can’t entirely insulate ourselves from negativity, but we can certainly spend more time focusing on the positive! Here are a few of the benefits of being an optimist and focusing on the positive.

  1. It Improves You Social Life

No one wants to be around a habitually negative person, always telling you how life is boring and difficult and how violent the whole world is becoming. Everyone would much rather be around someone that, in spite of the bad, can smile and say “yes this situation is not great, but did I tell you about the awesome thing I saw happen yesterday?” Being optimistic will make you more approachable and more likeable, giving you more friends to interact with.

  1. It Reduces Anger and Frustration

Always seeing the world in a negative light can make you angry and frustrated. If you always think your spouse is doing something wrong, or your kids are worse than the neighbors, or that work just is not going the way it should; you are going to grow increasing frustrated. This type of ongoing frustration eventually leads to hurt feelings and anger in many of your relationships. Optimism helps you to look past the little faults and focus on the good, such as how lucky you are to have a loving and supportive partner in your life, how happy your children are, and how fortunate you are for having a well-paying job. Positive thinking will turn your frown upside down and promote happiness instead of frustration.

  1. It Helps You To Welcome Change

Being optimistic is a great way to help welcome either wanted or unwanted change in your life. By looking at the positive, you will reduce the anxiety and stress that comes with big changes or decisions. If you simply look at all the negatives about each decision you will ultimately become paralyzed and not be able make an informed decision. Instead, try to focus on two positives for every negative that you see. This way, you can make informed decisions but not become paralyzed by the negative thoughts that surround those decisions.

  1. It Sets Your Mood

If you start your day with positive thoughts you are more than likely to be happy and cooperative throughout the day. Think about it, if you wake up feeling mad or upset, your mood will most likely be gloomy throughout the rest of the day. Why could this not work in the reverse? Try your best to wake up and look at the positive, starting your day on an optimistic note!

  1. Makes You More Likely To Be A Centenarian

Although scientists do not know why optimists live longer, they have done analysis of several different groups of people and the results are always the same. It seems as though those who are positive, and who live their lives as optimists, have a better chance at reaching the 100 year mark.

  1. Gets You More Job Offers and Promotions

Just like how your friends can feel and see your optimism, so can your boss, or your possible future employer. So, maybe it is not just about how much experience you have or how polished your resume is, but also about your attitude and your outlook when going into an interview. Optimism and positivity also help your productivity in your current job, which can get you noticed for promotions and other accolades. Research has also shown that those who are more optimistic are more content with their jobs and are happier even working jobs that are well below their skill level or expertise.

  1. Makes You Better at “Bouncing Back”

Dr. Martin Seligman in the Positive Psychology Center of University of Pennsylvania has done research about the “bounce back” ability of those who are optimistic versus those who tend to be more negative. The research showed that those given negative reinforcement in tasks are more likely to perform more poorly than those who are given positive feedback. This means that those who are given positive feedback, can then think more positively about themselves even in the midst of failure, and have a better chance of bouncing back more quickly than those who are pessimistic.

So, if you are not an optimist are you doomed? Are you going to forever live in faulty relationships with dead end jobs and the inability to make your life better? Of course not! Optimism and positive thinking can be learned so make the personal commitment to focusing more of your thoughts on the brighter sides of life!

9 Activities Linked To Living a Long Life

Everyone wants to live a long life right? You want to boost your chances of not only seeing your grandchildren but your great-grandchildren. You want to see how the world advances and what technological feats the human race achieve. Believe it or not, living a long life it not just wishful thinking anymore, it is actually possible. There are many people who live to be 100 or even older throughout the world and the number of these centenarians grows ever year. So, how can you join the ranks? How can you live to be 100 or more and still be happy, healthy, and enjoying life? Here are 9 activities that promote mental and physical health and well-being that have been linked to living longer and helping centenarians throughout the world.

  1. Having Knowledge of Health

One thing people are famous for is ignoring the warning signs of their body. Many people would rather take their chances than go to the doctor and have the chance of being told bad news. Others simply do not want to change their lifestyle. This is not helpful to wanting to live a long life, in fact it is exactly the opposite. Not having a good grasp on your health and altering your lifestyle to help yourself is how people die young or end up in pain as they get older. Know your body and take the warnings signs seriously. The quicker you know something is wrong, the easier it is to fix it and move on. This is true of many things in life, but especially for the body, which can degrade rapidly if not taken care of properly.

  1. Becoming Spiritual

When you hear the word spiritual you probably get a lump in your throat and the urge to throw yourself out the nearest window. Maybe you already believe in a higher power or maybe you are a strong willed atheist, or maybe you simply do not care either way. What people fail to realize is that spiritual and religious are not the same thing; it is religion that many are scared of, not the spiritual experience. Yes, you can be religious and spiritual at the same time, but you can be spiritual without necessarily believing in a higher power, like God. Believing in anything more than just yourself is a key to being spiritual. Many people hold reverence for life or believe in the powers of nature. These beliefs have been linked to clarity of mind and longer lives.

  1. Maintaining a Healthy Diet

Of course, taking care of your body is going to be one way that you live longer. The better the foods you eat, the more likely your body is getting the nutrients it needs without all the chemicals is does not. Those who eat double the recommended daily amounts of fruits and vegetables live longest, according to several health studies.

  1. Having A Positive Outlook on Life

It is true that pessimistic people do not live as long as those who are optimistic about life. Those who maintain positive thoughts even in dark times are more likely to look ahead and not be focusing on what makes them upset. They are more likely to want to live longer and get to that next great part of life. Joy, laughter, and happiness are all part of living a positive life.

  1. Be A Social Butterfly

It is no secret that most women live longer than men, but why is that? Researchers suggest that women are more emotionally invested in the thoughts and emotions of their friends. They often are a part of large groups that share anything and everything with each other, but men are every different. Men often have a very close knit group of friends as they get older, and men are not nearly as emotionally invested in each other as women are. Having close friendships can actually give you a reason to live, helping you to extend your life.

  1. Connect With Nature

Nature is all around you and can be a great source of happiness and respect for life. By helping to keep the planet healthy, you can also help keep yourself healthy! Work to protect mother earth, reduce your carbon footprint, and keep fresh water lakes and streams available. What you do right now will have an effect on your life as well as the lives of your posterity.

  1. Find A Creative Hobby

Creativity is a big part of having a purpose in life and keeping your brain stimulated. Sports, music, writing, and art are all some of the creative hobbies that you can do at any age to help promote your mental health and stability. Having a hobby you enjoy also keeps you from getting bored and falling into a monotonous routine. Keep your brain alive and your creative juices flowing! There is so much you can do, even when you reach old age.

  1. Be Active

You can’t just eat right and stimulate your brain, you need to keep your body healthy. Stay physically active and challenge yourself in new ways as you get older. Take care of your machine and your machine will take care of you!

  1. Spend Time With Those Who Are Young

A big part of living a long life is not getting behind in the times. Spend time with those who are young, but not simply to patronize them or give them wisdom. You can learn things form them, too! Connect with them through similar interests and learn from them about new technologies and things that are popular. Not only will you end up being the “cool grandparent,” but you will also keep yourself feeling young.

Use Your Imagination to Live a Better Life!

Your imagination forms when you are a young child and is active through your lifetime. Your imagination is how you space out and imagine different scenarios. Your imagination contributes to your dreams, and helps you create stories within your mind. Did you know that this amazing tool that you are given at birth is actually a key to helping you live a long and full life? It is true! And here are four reasons how:

  1. Stimulates Your Brain

What is imagination? No it is not just what gets little kids to believe in imaginary friends or causes a teenage girl to doze off in class thinking about her favorite band member. Imagination is much greater than that and spans through your entire life. It is the act of manipulating facts and images that you already know, to then help create unique and sometimes unusual stories.! Why we have an imagination is not quite known yet, but researchers work every day to try and figure it out. What is important to remember is that using your imagination is like a workout for your brain, and the more you use it, the happier and healthier that part of your brain will be. Daydream to stimulate your brain and build power!

  1. Makes You Happier

How often you use your imagination and what you imagine can actually effect your perception of life. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute who focus of finding out more about the biology of the human body, took their research to another level when they looked into the imagination. Their findings showed that subjects who used their imagination frequently and created ideal scenarios in their minds actually imposed those scenarios into their real lives. They used what happened in their imagination to alter what happened in their life. If they could not actually alter situations in their life, they used the “good feelings” from those images to promote happiness in their lives. Like many facts surrounding imagination and functions of the brain, it is unknown why this is true, but time and time again research shows it to be true.

  1. Can help Enhance Your Memory

As you get older, your memory begins to fade and that can take a toll on your mental health. When your mental health begins to degrade, so does you physical health; which leads to medical complications and a possible early death. The more you work your memory, the better chance you have of maintaining your mental health. So use it if you don’t want to lose it!

  1. Promotes Self-Discovery

Self-discovery is prominent through each phase of life. Each phase of your life is often accompanied by wonderings about who you are or what you should be doing at that point in your life. This is completely normal. However, getting lost in these questions is a problem and can lead to a lot of emotional and mental damage; which is not helpful to those wanting to live a long and full life. Imagining and daydreaming allows you to think about what your life could be depending on the path that you take. Everyone needs to go through the journey of self-discovery as those who do seem to live healthier lives that are full of happiness and content feelings.

Why Does Reading Matter?

Reading is a hobby for some and a chore for others. Some do it because they enjoy it, while others do it because they have to. However, as you get older it is important to not give up reading. Even if it is not entirely enjoyable, you should strive to try and read as much as possible. Reading can stimulate you mind, gives you new knowledge, transports you to other worlds, and gives you something to do on those days that are just boring. So, why exactly does reading matter for your life?

Here are a 7 reasons that you may want to consider making your reading list just a tad bit longer.

  1. It Expands Your Horizons

With so many different genres to choose from, you can expand your horizons significantly just by picking up a new genre of book every week. Crime dramas, mysteries, autobiographies, and science fiction are all completely different from each other, and the stories that you can read in these genres are basically unlimited. By expanding your reading, you can view a whole new world.

  1. Turns You into a Critical Thinker

Reading requires you to read and then think about what is being presented to you. This is especially true of mystery novels that require you to think and reflect on clues to hopefully figure out the mystery. Other genres also require you to think about what you are reading and pick it apart to really get at the details and the meaning of the writing.

  1. It Fills Your Mind

Books, magazines, articles, blogs, and many other sources of reading allow you to extend you knowledge base and learn about many different areas of study. From reading you can visit countries you have never been, explore the inside of plants and their biological functions, and even solve crimes alongside of professional FBI agents. There is unlimited information available through reading, and by aiming to read every day or every week you can greatly expand your personal knowledge.

  1. It Is Interactive

Reading is not just about sitting on your couch and reading words on a page. It is about using your mind to piece together facts and clues to comprehend what you are reading. By comprehending what you are reading, you can let your imagination take over and transport you into worlds that only exist in the imagination! Reading requires you to be an active participant while using your imagination, thus making it interactive and stimulating for your brain!

  1. It Reduces Stress

Reading is a leisurely activity that engages your mind completely. Many people cannot focus on anything but the book that they are reading once they get into it. This is why the activity is so beneficial as a stress relief. Reading allows you to forget about a lot of the stressors in your life, at least for a little while. That is why many people say they are extremely relaxed after reading a good book and can get on with their day without feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders.

  1. Increases Vocabulary

Although this is mostly true of younger children, even those who are middle aged or older can increase their vocabulary with frequent reading. Why? When you read and find a word you do not know, you cannot simply skip over it. Your mind will unconsciously take context clues from the text to give you the meaning of the word. That is why those who read a lot will often have a rich vocabulary.

  1. Improved Writing Skills

Reading and writing go hand in hand, and researchers have been able to prove that the more you read, the better your writing skills. Not only can those who read frequently write more professionally than those who do not, but they also have better spelling and grammar.

Even if you do not like reading, you have to admit that the benefits of it are fantastic! If you anticipate living a long, healthy, and happy life then reading will be your best friend. It is a great leisurely activity that helps to stimulate your mind and to absorb knowledge that you would not have had before. Reading at night or in the morning is most popular and can even help with the stress relief affects. If you already enjoying reading, then congratulations…read on, and improve the quality of your life!

Laughter is the Best Medicine

At some point in your life you probably heard the phrase “laughter is the best medicine.” Often this was told to you at times when you were hurting either emotionally or physically. Odds are, you have just ignored this advice through most of your life, simply believing it was something they told you to make you feel better. But, what if there really was some truth to that saying all along? What if laughter really IS the best medicine?

Laughing Statistics

According to research, laughing 100 times a day is the equivalent to 15 minutes of bike exercise because it uses muscles that we tend not to use such as the diaphragm, parts of the throat, and certain stomach muscles. Laughter is a great stress reliever and has been proven to help lift your mood when you are feeling blue. Laughing also helps promote blood flow, and prolonged deep laughter can clear old air from your lungs. Laughter also strengthens social bonds because it is a universal language understood by everyone. So, why does laughter do this? What is the secret between laughter’s seemingly magic powers?

Why Is Laughter So Healthy?

Professor Robert Provine who teaches at the University of Maryland says that no definitive research has been done about laughing. What does this mean? It means that everyone knows laughter is good for you, but they don’t know why. Yes, it reduces stress and helps your blood flow, but why? No one has really looked into this, yet. What is known is that when you laugh your muscles contract, your blood pressure and pulse shoot up, and you breathe heavily which increases oxygen flow. Laughter also burns 50 calories if you laugh continuously for 15 minutes. So, it may not be known why laughter is beneficial, but we know that it is.

How to Increase Laughter In Your Life

With laughter having so many beneficial properties, your goal should be to laugh, not only because it’s fun but also because it is healthy. So, how can you increase the amount of laughter in your life and bring on those amazing benefits?

  1. Decide That You Want To Laugh: Many people do not laugh because they don’t want to. Be comfortable laughing at yourself and your own mistakes, laugh with your partner, laugh with your kids. Just find excuses to laugh, and let yourself find the humor ,no matter how frustrated you may be with a situation.
  1. Be with Kids: Children are a big source of laughter, they just do so many funny things! Children are also known to laugh for no reason; laugh along with them. Immersing yourself in a child’s life for a few hours can help you laugh and bring you joy. This is the perfect reason to offer to spend time with your niece or nephew for a day or look after the neighbor’s 3 year old on a Saturday.
  1. Tell A Bad Joke: Nothing makes you and other people laugh more than a bad joke. Something that’s played out or is just a stupid pun should do the trick.
  1. Gravitate Towards Laughter: If you are at a party, dinner, or other social gathering and you see a group having fun and laughing, try and join them. Sit or stand with them and let them absorb you into their conversation. You will have a lot more fun than you would be yourself and it will also help put some laughter in to your life!

6 Intimacy Myths You Hear About Marriage

Marriage is a union between two people, bringing two lives together and creating a life. Of course, keeping a marriage together is not just about saying “I do,” it is about passion, intimacy, and commitment. One of the big things, however, that tends to tear marriages apart is a failing sexual relationship and a lack of intimacy. There are several myths about intimacy in a marriage that people listen to. Many of them, however, are not true and believing them can only hurt your marriage more.

  1. Your Sexual Relationship Will Improve Over Time

This is in fact, a myth. Sexual relationships need to be built and worked at. A bad sexual relationship is not going to improve. If you are not getting what you need or want you need to talk to your spouse. Do not think that your spouse can read your mind and that they will improve their skills or what they are doing over time. In fact, if you are unsatisfied in the bedroom; you will more than likely remain unsatisfied until it becomes a point of tension in your marriage.

  1. A Good Sexual Relationship Will Happen Right After You Are Married

This is yet another myth. Sexual relationships are something that needs to be worked on, they do not automatically happened. Those who do not have a sexual relationship before they are married will need to work harder than those who do. The best way to work on this kind of relationship is to talk about what you want and need and have your spouse respond; communication, openness, and vulnerability will help build a great intimate relationship once you say your vows. Without these traits, the relationship cannot hope to survive or be fulfilling for either person.

  1. Sexual Disinterest Will Happen; There Is Nothing You Can Do About It

Disinterest happens in the bedroom when things become normal and mundane. In the triangular Theory of Love developed by psychologist Robert Sternberg, he explains why. There are three key components to love: intimacy, passion, and commitment. In the beginning of a relationship whether you are newly dating or newly married, passion is high. This means that everything will be satisfactory, including the sexual relationship, making intimacy high. As the relationship progresses, commitment begins to determine whether or not a couple will stay together. Passion will decrease and if commitment does not increase, then intimacy will also decrease. If your marriage is built on lust and passion, not love and commitment, then it’s only a matter of time before you become disinterested in the bedroom. Those who build their relationship on love and commitment with the added benefit of passion, with see a sexual relationship that remains steady and enjoyable.

  1. There Will Always Be Physical Closeness

Warm cuddles and lots of sex and hand holding in public only goes on for so long. Passion and the want to be close all the time mostly happens in the beginning of a relationship. Again, refer to Sternberg’s triangular theory of love. Passion is very high at the beginning of a relationship or in new phases of a relationship. Marriage is a new phase to many relationships and therefore passion and the want to be close skyrockets. However, as the months and years go on, both parties will not desire to be as close. Yes, you will still want sex, to cuddle, and maybe have some PDA; but not all the time. Coming to terms with this reality will help you to not be heartbroken when your spouse begins to drift away slightly. Drifting away does not mean your relationship is ending; it simply means you are getting past what is known as the “honeymoon phase.”

  1. A Good Sexual Relationship Means There Will Not Be Other Marital Issues

Some people believe that sex can cure anything—but that is not quite true. Yes, a good sexual relationship can put problems on hold but that is all it will ever do. You will simply be pushing problems down the line until one day, you or your spouse explodes from a long list of complaints. Sex does not solve underlying relationship issues; it simply puts them off. Expect that there will be fights and disagreements in your marriage and agree to communicate about them. Do not try and bury them by using your sex life.

  1. Sexual Relationships Are Built From Passion Not Attitudes

Yes, passion is a great indicator of what your sexual relationship will be like, but after a while, that initial passion will begin to fade. In the end, your attitudes toward your sexual relationship mean more than your level of passion ever will. If you have a negative attitude, are not willing to compromise, or refuse to listen to your spouse’s wants and needs, then passion alone will not save your relationship.

The Power of a Random Act of Kindness

Have you ever seen an unexplainable act of kindness and wonder, “why would anyone do that? Why would anyone stop to talk to the homeless man on the side of the street? Why would a woman on the phone offer to buy that candy for another person’s kids because they receive government aide? Why would a business man, simply going about his day stop on the subway to give a woman selling flowers $140? You may think that these are things that never would happen, but what if you saw the last one with your own eyes?

About a year ago on a busy subway a woman selling flowers was stopped by a man in a business suit. He asked how much a rose would cost and then asked to buy the entire array of flowers. The only catch? The woman had to promise him that she would give away the entire cart of flowers that he purchased, to total strangers also traveling on the subway that day. At first the woman responded to the man’s outlandish request with suspicion, but after the man handed gave her the $140 in cash, the woman was so touched by the man’s random act of kindness that she broke out in tears in front of him and the rest of the on looking passengers. The subway then arrives at the next station, the doors open, and the man exits and slips away into the crowd. The entire exchange was caught on film by one of the on looking passengers. And the last portion of the film then shows the woman sobbing tears of joy as she announces to the rest of the passengers to step forward if they would like a free flower!

Who would do this kind of thing? We are so used to people in this world being mean, vindictive, and cruel to one another. We are used to riots in the streets, injustice by authority, violence in the classrooms, and men in pristine suits walking by those who are in need. So who are these seemingly few “Good Samaritans” and where do they come from… and why are there not more of them? The man on the subway seemed to care less about the money that he handed the woman, even though for many a $140 is a lot of money. Was this man rich? Was this simply disposable income? Or was he just a good man who wanted to bring a smile to the face of a total stranger?

Not much is known about the man on the subway, but if he was like any other average business man on that subway, $140 was a decent chunk of money for him. Yet, he gave it away easily. He did not just do good for one person, however, he let his good deed spread and do good for many others in the general vicinity of his deed.

There are the types of random acts of kindness that I hope we all render to others as often as we can. Money and belongings do not help you once you are gone. Yes, those things can help your family and community if you choose to do so, but you certainly can’t take your material possessions with you when you die.

Joke: A dying rich man makes his son promise that his father will be buried with all of his money when he dies. So at the father’s burial, the son kept his promise and wrote a check, written to the name of his father, and in the amount of 1 million dollars, and placed it into the open grave.
When you realize this somber fact, you might feel more inclined to identify a well deserving individual organization that could blessed by a random act of kindness on your part. And then you, too, may then be counted as another one of the “Good Samaritans” in the world, by those who you directly serve, but just as importantly considered as such by the silent bystanders who see your example and who hopefully inspired to do the same.

How to Build Positive Relationships

Positive relationships are good for you in so many ways. They are good for your heart, they keep you young, they can help you live longer and they work as a buffer during emotional times in your life. However, many people go through their life not knowing how to build positive relationships, and thus they fail to. They socialize with only people who want to use them, or they remain in toxic friendships and they do not know of the benefits of fostering positive relationships. Sometimes they do not even know how to build something positive if all the relationships they have ever had have been negative. If you happen to be one of these people, good news, you do not lose the ability to build positive relationships. If you are on the receiving end of too much negativity, it’s not too late even in middle age to surround yourself with positive friendships.

Here are 6 tips to help you build and maintain positive relationships in your life:

  1. Put Away Your Phone

Although mobile devices can be a great form of communication and they offer an abundance of knowledge at your fingertips; they may not be helpful in fostering healthy relationships. One thousand “cyber friends” will never replace one solid confidante in your life who has your back when you really need help. And building that level of friendship takes more than just sending them an email or text once in awhile.

  1. Trust More

This is extremely important in any relationship. By trusting someone you will tell them more about your private life. The more you emotional support that you give, the more emotional support you can receive. By trusting someone they will also learn to trust you, which forms a deep bond. No, you do not have to trust everyone, but many positive and healthy relationships have a significant amount of trust in them.

  1. Develop Your Communication Skills

Communication doesn’t just relate to being able to speak well, but also listening well. Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings which can be detrimental to any type of relationship. Make sure that you are speaking clearly and never assume that you are being 100% understood; allow questions.

  1. Learn To Listen

Have you ever heard the joke about why we have two ears and only one mouth? Listening is a very important part of communication because if you are not really listening to the question then how can you provide an informed answer? And if you are willing to listen to others they will most likely also be more willing to you. Listening well lets people feel valued and helps to raise their self-esteem. Listening effectively also makes you trustworthy; which is again important to positive relationships.

  1. Celebrate Differences

One of the most difficult things about having any type of relationship is how seemingly every person in this world is so different. But on the other hand, imagine how boring this world would be if everyone was the same? The best “people persons” know how to identify common ground with any new person, despite how different their backgrounds may be, and then to start with that in order to build a relationship of trust and friendship. If you’re willing to dig deep enough, you’ll see just how similar we all are to each other!

  1. Develop Empathy

People may forget what you did for them, but they will never forget how you make them feel, good or otherwise. Have empathy and try your best to give advice based upon your own experiences and do not belittle someone’s feelings.

The Benefits of Having Friends with Different Interests

People say that opposites attract, and that is not just for love. It’s true that people who are different from you are intriguing. They have interests that you may never have explored and they do the things that you have never thought to try. Maybe this is why men and women in their midlife crisis often abandon what they know as safe and reliable for events and friendships that are less than healthy. In fact, having friends that have different interests from you keeps you on your toes and can even be a key to being more content with your own life.
Keep reading to explore some of the proven benefits of having friends that interests that differ from your own.

Experience New Things
One of the best things about having friends with different interests, especially as you get older, is their ability to help you experience new things. Maybe your best friend loves golfing and you have never tried that or they are interested in a specific art form that you have never experienced before. They allow you to experience more and branch out from what may have become mundane and boring to you. However, it is important to remember that not every interest your friend may have may be good for your life so use common sense in what new things you choose to experience.

Expand You Horizons
Friends of different religions and cultures are a great way to expand your horizons. You will begin to absorb different opinions about social issues and expand your view of the world through other cultures.

Helps You Deal with Differences
As you get older you will more than likely be less willing to compromise. Whether it be on where you want to go for dinner, you opinion on politics, or your ideas for an important project in the office. By maintaining friendships with people who are different from you, you will learn how to handle disagreements in a healthier way and help you compromise even as you get older.

Fills in the Missing Pieces of You
As you get older you may begin to feel less content in your life and find gaps in your life. Friends with different interests can help fill these. They can help you get that sense of excitement back, without putting yourself or your family in jeopardy. Friends who are different from you can also help you fill in those traits that you do not see yourself as having, such as courage, enthusiasm, or passion. Friends who differ from you are a source of these traits in times where you seem to lack them.

You Can View Different Walks Of Life
Part of having friends of different interests is having friends of different ages. No matter how old you are, you can learn from people of all ages. Older friends show you what life could be like at the next stage can help you avoid unnecessary mistakes when you get there, by seeing what someone else has done right or wrong. Younger friend’s help you maintain a feeling of youth and let you stay connected with the generation behind you, helping you to stay in touch with the cutting edge of all things new. Both of these types of friendships have actually been linked to helping people live longer.

There is no right or wrong way to have a friendship, and in many ways there are no right or wrong friends. Friends can have a variety of interests, personalities, and ages and still be as close to you as your best friend who agrees with you in every way. In fact, different friendships may be healthier than friendships made by people who are exactly the same. So branch out! Take good risks and reclaim your youth by using the act of friendship.

Good Risks vs. Bad Risks

Once you reach middle age you may begin to experience stress and anxiety based upon your life. You may wonder where your life is going, if you have really entered the right career path, and even wonder if your spouse is the right one for you? You will probably have the urge to “feel young again,” and take risks to make yourself feel alive. The good news is that you are not alone, many middle age men and women experience these feelings. Just asking questions probably isn’t going to hurt you, but acting on those questions might. Acting on the desire to take certain risks may end up not only hurting themselves but their loved ones as well.

What Are Bad Risky Decisions?

The biggest thing to remember is that taking risks is not inherently bad. There are good risks and bad risks and the trick is being able to distinguish between the two when making a decision. Some examples of bad risky decisions include:

  • Affairs: That young new blonde secretary may seem like fun, but do you really want to throw away your marriage? Do not ditch a perfectly fine relationship for a thrill. Try and work on putting the passion back into your marriage instead; a much more rewarding experience.
  • Gambling: You may think you have all the money in the world once you pull that slot machine lever, but 9 times out of 10 this will only end in tragedy. There are countless cases of men going into casino risking it all for that one in a million chance and losing everything. Do not let that be you.
  • Illegal Drugs: Illicit substances may seem intriguing, but it is only because it is something you are not supposed to do. In reality, drugs like Cocaine, Heroin, and Ecstasy are illegal for very good reasons. The temporary high that they give you is nothing compared to the years of therapy and rehab that you will need to kick the habit. An illegal drug habit could burn through your bank account, could destroy your family, could send you to jail, or could even kill you. It is best to simply say no.
  • Bar Hopping: It may seem like a great idea to relive your younger years by going from bar to bar and stumbling home drunk on the weekends. Not only could this weekend activity lead to you becoming an alcoholic but it can also suck your money and take your attention away from work and family; the two things that you are responsible for in middle age.

What Are Good Risks?

Once you understand what bad risks are, you may think there is not really anything “fun” left to do with your life during middle age. After all, if you can’t do what you shouldn’t, what’s fun about it? The answer is: everything. There are still so many amazing risks that you can take in middle age that are productive and can make you feel free. Here are some good risks:

  • Do Something You’ve Always Wanted To: Is there an activity that you’ve always wanted to do? Have you always wanted to learn to snowboard? Take a mixology class? Enter some kind of contest? When you have time, take a long weekend and go try it. Take a friend or two, but make the weekend about you. This is your time to find yourself again.
  • Change Your Diet: One thing that can impact your mood is your diet. Try to change some things in your diet to be healthier. Not only is this good for you but it gives you a challenge and a goal to work towards.
  • Meet New People: Go out and make some new friends, maybe people you would not normally talk to and you’ll be surprised how much you will learn about yourself and others.
  • Do What You’ve Really Wanted To Do: If you do not feel content with your job anymore it may be time for a job or career change. This is a big risk but it can be good. You just have to do it right. Do not just go into the office one day and quit without a plan. Plan out what you want to do and see if it is even possible. And if it is, and you’ve got the consent and support of your family and loved ones behind you, then go for it!

Taking risks at any point in life is not wrong, but the key is being able to discern which ones are good risks and which are bad, and then to act on the good ones and leave the bad ones behind.
